So I have a netflix and hulu plus subscription which we use every day. At the moment have a media center with xbmc on it for local content, but due to the browser based netflix and hulu having a much better interface that the xbmc plugin I am looking at getting either an Apple TV or Roku.

I have read a few comparisons and each one has an advantage over the other.

The pros for the Apple TV for me is the fact that if I want to, I could use airplay to mirror my ipad 2. But that's about it.

The pros for the roku is Plex support and all the private channels and public channels. I especially like how it supports the channels you've added on plex to be used on roku. Then I will be able to watch CBS shows which are not on hulu plus or netflix.

To the guys and girls which have a device mentioned above. What would you recommend and why? I use unotelly's DNS service to access the content in case you're wondering what I'm using.

At the moment I think the Roku is better value for money.

Maybe you should find out if CBS works through Plex first. I tried using Netflix through Plex and it failed. I'm also using UnoTelly. Netflix work fine on my Apple TV, though. I'm going to add CBS on on Plex now and see if it works.

I added CBS to Plex and it installed. However, when I select it, there's no content.

So far I've tried CBS, BBC, Hulu, NBC, and Netflix and all don't work. I either don't see any content or get a file read error. I'm using Plex Server on Mountain Lion Server and Plex Media Center on a Mac Mini. Maybe it's a config issue.

Do you know of anyone that actually added these type of channels to Plex and has them working? On any client.

If you didn't already have a media PC for local content I'd suggest you steer clear of the AppleTV. Converting movies to add to iTunes is a pain. The newest model hasn't been jailbroken, so no Plex.

I use a Raspberry PI running Raspbmc as well as an Apple TV.

@timmie: What service are you using to bypass the Netflix country check?

Apple TV works really well as long as it is jailbroken.I have ATV flash running on mine which has a lot of extra features.
The Plex plugins are a bit of a hit and miss affair on the Apple TV but have no problem running CBS,ABC,CW,NBC,BBC through Plex app on my iPad.

Thanks for that. That confirms its something not working on my side. It doesn't work on my iPad. I tried making another server on my MacBook but still doesn't work. I'll make a server on Windows later. Maybe that will fix it.

Got a few channels working on my iPad but nothing works on the Mac Mini.

Registering a US Netflix account seems to have become non-US proof.

Anyone?

I got the Roku 2 XS from TakeALot. Was about R1.5k from what I remember.

Edit: I lie. It was Have2Have. Had a brain fail.

So please explain how this work, in detail if you dont mind?
What channels can you watch and what can you watch for free?
Does it stream well?
I have uncapped 4MB, looking to watch stuff like CNN, other news etc in fairly decent quality

Seems lots of issues, http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2011-07/roku-2-review/

I got it primarily for Plex, and it is the best non-PC client out there.
I also play Field Runners on it. Awesomeness.

Streaming I have not done too much. Ted is do quite a bit, and that works well.

Saw some new movie app on Sat night which I tried out. Worked pretty well but not much of a selection yet.
Can't remember the app name. Will check it out tomorrow when I get home from the hospital and report back.

Overall, I love this device.

Some mates have Apple Tvs and glad I went the Roku route.

Thanks man

Jeez man hope you ok

Just a routine Hiatus Hernia op dude. I was due for discharge yesterday and just before the doc came everything swelled up and swallowing became impossible. So they stuck me back on a drip and took me off food/liquids.
This AM I put down a can of ice tea and some jelly, so things looking up again. Hopeful I can get out of here soon and go play with my toys.
Being away from my family is killing me. Did not expect a whole week here.
