ROS: Internet, DStv-On-Demand, entertainment, security in a box

Looks huge. HD-PVR has 500 GB of space and is too small. 3 TB drives are only about R 1,000 today.
Nice concept though.

i know this is probably not the best thread to post this on but does anyone know when smart village internet will be up and running in century city in cape town? been down since wednesday due to apparent fibre break...

It's not clearly stated in the article that not just anyone can purchase and make use of one of these devices. You need to live in a Smart Village complex (or at least that's my understanding of it?)

Why put in such a tiny HD? The sweet spot for HDs these days are what - 2TB (in terms of space/cost)?

Unfortunately I also have a fundamental problem with guys like SmartVillage who tries and provide everything - their internet offering usually sucks (slow, expensive). And estates manages to believe this is the best value and prohibit other connections!

This thing is seriously fugly - no way I am going to have this piece of s*^& in my lounge. Come guys - how hard is it to put a bit more effort to make this thing look slick rather than from some backyard operation designed by Piet next door.

Was getting excited, untill I read the FAQ on their site. (it turned out to be a Fark-U)

Q- If I have a 3G broadband connection, can I use ROS?
A- No. ROS will only work with Smart Village's broadband internet service
Q- What is ROS’s hard disk capacity?
A- 320 GB. Capacity can be expanded with an external USB storage device
Q- What happens to my existing home setup (modem, wireless router, media player, and storage device)
once I purchase ROS?
A- ROS is designed to simplify the home network, so you'll no longer need most of those devices. All of their existing functions, and more, are included in ROS.

With 320GB they think they will replace the need for all your current stuff. Really?

Who are you with? Amobia?

All I'm interested in from this is getting DSTV on Demand and DSTV Box Office on my media centre. Does DSTV allow any sort of API for this (assume that's a rhetorical no.)

Looks like a printer! At that price I'd rather buy an XBox or PS3 for a media centre, already got DSTV.
