Thread: Gizmo Project

    Default Gizmo Project

I'm using Iburst and have been trying out various voip programs to find an alternative to Telkom. Voipdiscount.com is proving a total disaster as a pc-based phone, but the ones that work for me are Skype and Gizmo Project. The latter is similar to Skype and a touch more expensive, but I think that with Iburst Gizmo Project gives slightly better sound quality than Skype.

    Default Gizmo Project

I'm not a very technical guy, but I was given 25c to try it out. I phone a friend in JHB on his landline and was very impressed with the sound quality. It sounded better than Skype with hardly a delay.

I have been testing Gizmo a little more and it works nicely to a mobile phone and is great for calls to landlines. Definately the one to use if you're using Iburst. It has a bandwidth meter indicating possible call quality. I'm just sorry that I wasted 10 Euros on Voipdiscount.com which really does not work well with Iburst.

    Default i-burst

    hi there

i work for GVSC and we install voip solutions. i-burst is great for going on the net but not really for voip. if you have awsome signal you can maybe use one ip phone but that really is it.

The new version looks promising. There's even a beta version for linux.

All calls to Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live, Google Talk, and Gizmo Project users are free.

Gizmo have included a Call IN (Joburg based) PSTN number
which you can dial out and conenct from your fring app
    on your mobile phone.
The cost of $50 for 3 months for the call in is abit heavy.
But look at this way, how much will Mobile calls cost to your
    mobile number for your customers.
If its family then the Telkom Closer plan options work very well
as it is a regular Telkom number. Depending on what plan you are
on it can be a free call up to 16hrs call time during the day and
free after hours (limited to one hour)
THe other hidden cost will be how much data will your voip
call cost you on your mobile as these calls are routed via your data
    bundle.

Registered for the Gizmo Callin option but so far no luck with any audio
will dialing my Joburg Gizmno based number.

OK got the audio issue working with Gizmo and my Joburg based
landline number working. If Gizmo setup up on both laptop
    and mobile both ring simultaneously

    * Setup Gizmo SIP account under fring on mobile
    * Register for Gizmo call in Joburg landline ($50 for 3 months, should be $12), so for family to
contact me dial a Joburg number all very well if you have Telkom Closer plan, and no need to
    dial my mobile number

Callers will call my Joburg land line number (011-46133XXX) to route call to my mobile,
    no more GSM rates.

Alternative is to purchase a SIP account from Connection Telecom and then
apply for the DID 021-xxxxxx landline dedicated to your SIP account
Approx R90/month excl out VoIP out connect bundle at reduced mobile and telkom rates.
    Mobile R1.40/min
    Telkom R0.55/min

Why is it $50 if the website says $12, is that just for SA?

At $12 it'd be worth it, $50 just seems too much.
