CrossOver for Mac Beta Now Available

From what I've read on Crossover, it would appear that you will only be able to run specific Office/Windows programs, or am I missing something?

Depends - does not needing Windows itself make a difference?

Not really, well, for me in any case. Some of our client applications are specialised, so I do need Windows to some degree still ... hopefully not for too long though

Then Parallels is probably better suited for you. For me there arent many PC apps that I'd even want to run and I'm not sure if I even have a copy of windows around anymore so Parallels might not be an option for me. Crossover is, afaik, akin to WINE on Linux.

All I need to know is if Crossover will run the dreaded Coreldraw.
If it does, I can finally throw the PC away!!!

But, all that being said, I am busy downloading the Beta, and see what its like and whether it will be usable for me:

One of the main requirements for me will be IE and Visio, and a few other client side apps. Will keep you guys updated, and maybe (try to) do a comparison with Parallels

EDIT: Might even still be today ... downloading the 30Mb at 105KB/s Noone seems to be "working" today

Its listed as untested but you can throw the PC away anyway if you load bootcamp (and perhaps Parallels too).

But anyway - Coreldraw Big yuck.

Yeah, I know. Corel is the virus of our industry, but some customers still won't move on to something better. You know the type: no-show work-from-home designers that think they are a designer just because they have a pc.

Yeah, when I get the Mac Pro I will probably get Parallels. Boot camp is not a very efficient solution. Rebooting wastes time.

I first moved to mac because of Quark and Adobe. When Adobe goes universal I'll look at getting a MacBook Pro but for now my powerbook still gets the job done - oh - and my boss is cheap with things like that

Most of our customers are on Mac.
Luckily my boss is quite happy to spend money on macs - I converted him. We are now busy replasing all the computers in the company with macs. Halfway there and allready things are a lot easier.

Seems like a whole lot of trouble to be able to run parts of office 97/2000 stably. Everything later seems to be working only partially.

I have had no luck getting anything to install on Crossover (even their 'Certified/compatible' programs exit during the install)
EDIT: Actually managed to install IE6 now, but simulated as win98?! Why not XP? Very strange

Pretty cool idea though.

There's only one part of office that might warrant porting to OsX is Access - though FMP is imo superior anyway

In fact if iWorks comes out with a spread sheet in the next version I'll probably ditch Office completely.

That said OpenOffice should be running natively next month too.

Wouldn't it just be easier to run the Mac version of Office?
