Hey MyBB

Hope there is a person or two out there that could assist with this issue.

I have a 1MB 'unshaped' ADSL service. I use it mostly for gaming and downloading, but the gaming is what I am more concerned about. I share my ADSL connection with my beloved girlfriend, who enjoys Facebook, YouTubing and sending and receiving emails with oversized attachments.

My issue then is obvious, when we get home in the evening and all I want is to play Dota, Battlefield, CoH or any other online game, the missus jumps on her laptop and my experience is ruined by huge lag spikes, rubberbanding and a generally rubbish connection. I asked on another forum and was told I need a bandwidth manager to prioritise data. She doesn't really care if Facebook loads slightly slower, but obviously constant lag spikes pretty much ruin a game.

Is this the best way to go about it, as I've heard that port forwarding may also fix the issue? Also, because I am a noob, I don't really know how to go about any of this.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to prioritize your gaming ports with quality of service settings (QoS). Most ADSL routers have some sort of rudimentary incarnation of QoS but many are just useless at it.

What router are you using?

Another simple solution may be to just limit the bandwidth available to the laptop so there is always dedicated bandwidth available for your gaming, some routers will also have an option like this but first let us know what router you are using.

I very much doubt this is going to completely solve your problem. I would imagine your girlfriend would just get irritated with slower loading times. But a trial run wouldn't hurt.

Your best bet is to limit the bandwith available to her, that way it does not affect your gaming.

Limit here to 1KB/s....bwahahahah.

Or get here a capped 3G contact...just for her.

Yeah, on doing a bit of searching, bandwidth management and QoS comes up a lot, unfortunately I'm not really savvy enough to understand exactly what I am supposed to be doing.

My router is a "Duxbury DUX412 3G ADSL Wireless Vo IP Gateway for WCDMA/HSUPA Networks". I paid quite a bit of cash for it because of the 3g aspect (which I was forced to use before I moved into my new place) but I haven't been able to find anything in the router setup menus which would help solve my issue.

Thanks again for the assist.

I cannot find any resources online for this model so I cannot see what features the router firmware has.

Another option would be to install Netlimiter on the laptop and use that to limit the bandwidth on that specific device.

I have also found next to nothing on the internet to to help. The router does however come with a fairly comprehensive manual but its just to technical for slow mind to grasp.

Your suggestion is not really an option unfortunately as the laptop is her work laptop and I don't think her IT department would appreciate that kind of an addition.

I'll have another look at the routers manual (when I am home later). Is there any broad suggestions as to what I should be looking for or trying to implement? For example, will I need to limit access to specific sites, restrict bandwidth to a specific IP address (which I assume would mean I need static IPs - an issue in itself), etc.

Netlimiter does a decent job of limiting bandwidth per process or connection. I believe you can remotely access it as well over your home network, not compatible with Windows 8 yet though, but emailed the developer and he said I can expect Netlimiter 4 first week of May.
