He also denies subscription fees — up to R469/month for DStv — are too high. Its rates, he says, are favourable when compared with prices charged for similar services in other markets. He also says MultiChoice will not engage in a price war. “You can damage your business that way,” he says.
So by not competing you're going to improve your business? How much revenue is going to disappear along side opentime when that's taken away?

I suppose even the dodo figured things were going well.

He says MultiChoice is adding subscribers at a rate of 100000/year.
Soon "adding" will mutate to "losing"

He cautions prospective competitors that pay TV is “not the gravy train it’s sometimes misconstrued to be”. He says investment costs are high and returns are not always guaranteed.
Yeah right , like you really worry about your competition failing...Isn't that what you want?

Telkom says current market offerings are targeted at high-income earners only and offer little flexibility. They fail, the company says, to address the mass market.
I didn't know Telkom knows how to cater for the mass market, It would seem that the majority of their current products are aimed at "high income" earners.

This is a reflection of supply side weaknesses rather than demand side dynamics, it adds.
At least they understand at least one thing about economics. The rest of the theory seems to escape them though.

I think Telkom should first try and sort out the service levels for their telecommunications business before getting in to things like sat. T.V.

Yup so we can eventually look forward to SABC 1-10 with reruns of Wielie Wielie Walie from like 30 yrs ago. They'll have to pay me to watch that junk. Rather give us subscriptions and more Gigs to download legal USTV shows like in the states (e.g. Warner bro's & CBS)

The rates are favourable when compared to which services in which markets exactly? Would he care to elaborate.....

Of course they're not too high - they're paying his salary.

My suggestion get rid off all the dead-wood, like this guy, and pass the savings on to the consumer.

Aaahhh! With some competition maybe now we will see a return of the SciFi channel and the introduction of the Comedy channel!

2 things are certain, they're all full of **** and I won't subscribe to anything unless its really worth having... 10 channels for R150 a month!!! thats as bad as DSTV compact! if MultiCheat can give me full dstv at R100 a month or less, well, you know....

Depends what channels they're offering. Are theye better than the junk DSTv has in their cheaper option? If I can pick 10 channels I want then I'd definitely consider it. That's what's wrong with DSTv - they don't offer a cheaper option that lets me get the channels I'd want.

i wonder if Telkom will have a silly set up.. like ADSL style. you know.
RX00 to have the service per month and RX0 per channel etc

Out of all the applicants I actually honestly think Telkom & ODM hav the best plan in action to make a success out of this niche market!!

I am though quite interested in seeing wether we wont have anatha "3rd Mobile Network Operator" issue where CellC was brought in 2 stabilise Vodacom & MTN but they technically made the saga worse!

Lets hope to see real competition for once in South Africa!

I couldn't have said it better myself. Of course, I'm refering to Telkom's handling of the ADSL market. Same applies to Pay-TV in South Africa, so this is a classic case of the "Pot calling the Kettle black"

I do concur with another forumite who mentioned that simply being able to select which specific channels I want and only paying on a reasonable per-channel-basis is what this market needs. The rest can fight among themselves over service, quality and ultimately price.
Waiting for the day Consumers' interest is given priority in South Africa over greedy profiteering and unacceptably low service
