Using MTN Data Promo Sim to Make Phone Calls

Long story short: Can the MTN 500MB promo data sim be used to make phone calls and send sms. I got conflicting feedback from a few MTN stores. Some say it can but the charges are very high, others say it cannot be used at all to make phone calls. Can someone who is currently using the sim please confirm.

I didn't get any response here, but just went ahead and got the MTN 2GB package for R99 / month. I'm using the sim in my phone at the moment and everything is working perfectly. Call charges are high at R1.99 per minute, but I hardly make calls. I hardly send sms as I mostly use Whatsapp. For me it's just perfect.
