Hey, was in the market for Multimedia Top box and I beleive above 2 are the best options.

Any feedback and advice on which one is better....

Can get them both from Amazon and Ebay and price is very similar... Incredible Corruption is a rip of @R1699 for the WD...

I don't know about the Roku but I have the WD which I use for Netflix and it serves its purpose well.

Only paid R1 100 for it about 3 months ago from Nivo.

Dionwired - R1100 for the WD, off the shelf. Was keen on a Roku, but the WD was available right there, and now have 3 of them scattered in the house. Very happy, but the Roku looks just as good.

PS: Roku has only HDMI output, which is a bit of let down if you (like me), need to run optical or coax for digital surround audio. My 8 year old surround amp is still chugging along

WD TV Live bought from takealot for R999 incl delivery, has most of the streaming services and bonus of connecting a usb drive.
I have connected a 3TB and 32gb usb drive and never had any issues.

Depends on the usage..

If there is a NAS with media, then I would lean towards the Roku.

need to sort out the bedroom. cant watch my stuffs currently. that WD looks ideal.

How well does the Roku work with Plex Media Server? I'm guessing you can install the Plex app on it (or something along those lines). Can you see all the metadata from the Plex server? Browse by category etc.

Alternatively can it stream media directly off your local network/network share and build up it's own metadata database? Can the WD TV Live do this?

Yes for the WD part. Haven't used the Roku yet.

I have Roku's primarily for Plex, Netflix and Hulu. They are very good with streaming services.

Cannot hook up to local shares. WDTV if you need to do that. Roku everything else.
With Plex I don't see the need for local shares TBO.

Hmm, after reading this, and doing some reading, I have just bought a Roku 3 on Amazon - good to see that they will ship this to SA !

Quick question about the Roku 3, just got mine in the mail and wanna make sure all I need is a little US to SA adapter right? No issues or any special plug I need to use it in SA?

Just make sure that the power brick says 110-220 volts. 110 volt only is no good.

Supports our voltage. Just need a plug adapter.

The Celeron 847 Intel NUC motherboard appears to be selling for ~R900 on Amazon Japan if that's of any interest. The Gigabyte Brix is also going on sale shortly. These are small form factor HTPCs with much greater processing power than either the WD TV Live or the Roku 3.

If you are planning to use a commercial service such as Hulu Plus you might be able to get a discount on a Roku with a 6 month subscription etc. although the additional SA shipping costs might offset any savings. Have2have also have several Roku models listed on their website.
