How difficult is it to upgrade a tower to use a better coding scheme? Is it is in software or is there hardware involved?

Depends on the type of equipment installed. AFAIK, most towers (if not all) are on CS3/4.

Sounds like you have a specific tower in mind?

Don't forget backhaul limitations - it may require an upgrade to the backhaul to accomodate the extra CS's. And of course, we know where that backhaul comes from

Well, I am looking at a few towers. Ceres, PA Hamlet, Wolseley, tulbagh and the matroosberg area. I can send you GPS coordinates if that would help.

More that a year + ago (when things around EDGE was unclear among service providers), an important guy at Vodacom told me he will come and see me and sort me out. After several calls and a few months down the line I have decided to use MTN GPRS for my clients.

I really want to Edge, but when connecting in Wolseley, it is slower than MTN and very unstable... That is with an external antenna...

PM me the details and I'll get the Western Cape planners to check it out. The area is mostly covered with EDGE, so it might be as Brad says, a back-haul issue.

Any which way, we need to understand why you're getting low throughputs. I'll sort out the 'important' guy that did not get back to you! PM me.
