Hi all,

just need some advice on which format is best to rip dvd's to maintain dvd quality or blu ray. I have recently acquired the WD TV live, and am making up my library of movies and tv series for the ext HDD. Using a Mac with MacX DVD Ripper Pro.

Don't know that product, but Handbrake will do m4v or mkv depending on what you like. I've personally been using mkv, but if you have lots of Apple devices in-house you want playback on m4v will give you better compatibility. Also be sure to pay attention to the audio stream with handbrake. It often likes to downmix it to something else, but you can preserve the DTS or AC3 stream untouched in pass-through mode.

Agree with morkhans - mkv. I use DVDRemaster Pro to get my MKVs. If you have it stashed away, use it. If not, it is quite expensive (US$50) but it often comes up on promos and bundles. Hell, I think I may have more than one license for it because of this.

Handbrake is of course also available and probably does the job just as well.

I use MKV (Matroska) to ensure widest portability.

Hmmm, My LG home theatre system doesnt recognize .MKV, but my SAMSUNG TV does.

the file format eg. avi is a container, the video/audio codecs used when compressing is the important part. I use divx/mp3 for compatibility. mkv container is nice for subtitles.
