Iran election: President-elect Hassan Rouhani hails win

Hassan Rouhani has hailed his election as Iran's president as a "victory of moderation over extremism".

The reformist-backed cleric won just over 50% of the vote and so avoided the need for a run-off.

Thousands of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran when the result was announced, shouting pro-reform slogans.

The US expressed concern at a "lack of transparency" and "censorship" but praised the Iranian people and said it was ready to work with Tehran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged continued international pressure on Iran to curb its nuclear programme.

"The international community must not give in to wishful thinking or temptation and loosen the pressure on Iran for it to stop its nuclear programme," Mr Netanyahu told his cabinet, according to a statement released by his office.

Some 72.2% of the 50 million eligible voters cast ballots on Friday to choose the successor to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mr Rouhani issued a statement saying that "a new opportunity has been created for those who truly respect democracy, interaction and free dialogue".

The 64-year-old cleric said: "I thank God that once again rationality and moderation has shone on Iran... This victory is a victory for wisdom, moderation and maturity... over extremism."

But he also said: "The nations who tout democracy and open dialogue should speak to the Iranian people with respect and recognise the rights of the Islamic republic."

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei congratulated Mr Rouhani on his victory, saying: "I urge everyone to help the president-elect and his colleagues in the government, as he is the president of the whole nation."

Ayatollah Khamenei will ratify the vote on 3 August and the new president will then take the oath in parliament.

Sanctions

There were scenes of celebration in the capital, as thousands of people, many sporting Mr Rouhani's election colour of purple, took to the streets.

Security officials stood by but did not intervene as crowds chanted: "Long live Rouhani."

After the last presidential election in June 2009, millions of Iranians took to the streets to demand a re-run, when the supreme leader dismissed claims by the three defeated candidates of widespread fraud.

On Saturday, some chants were heard calling for the release of political prisoners, a policy Mr Rouhani appears to support.

One of Mr Rouhani's main election pledges was to try to ease international sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear programme.

Iran has been suffering economic hardship, with rising unemployment, a devalued currency and soaring inflation.

But although Mr Rouhani has pledged greater engagement with Western powers, correspondents warn that power remains in the hands of the ruling clerics and the Revolutionary Guard.

The US said it respected the vote and would "engage Iran directly" to find a "diplomatic solution that will fully address the international community's concerns about Iran's nuclear programme".

But White House spokesman Jay Carney did congratulate Iranians for their courage in voting.

The UK Foreign Office urged Mr Rouhani to "set Iran on a different course for the future: addressing international concerns about Iran's nuclear programme... and improving the political and human rights situation for the people of Iran".

France said it was "ready to work" with the new leader, while Russian President Vladimir Putin urged him to forge closer ties with Moscow.

Surge of support

Mr Rouhani, who has held several parliamentary posts and served as chief nuclear negotiator, had not been an obvious landslide winner.

The surge of support for him came after Mohammad Reza Aref, the only reformist candidate in the race, announced on Tuesday that he was withdrawing on the advice of pro-reform ex-President Mohammad Khatami.

Mr Rouhani thus went into polling day with the endorsement of two ex-presidents - Mr Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who was disqualified from the race by the powerful Guardian Council, a 12-member body of theologians and jurists.

In the end, Mr Rouhani won 18,613,329 of the 36,704,156 votes cast. This represented 50.71% of the vote, giving him enough to avoid a run-off.

Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf won 6,077,292 votes to take second place (16.56%).

Saeed Jalili came third and Mohsen Rezai fourth.

Excellent. Will the Western and Israeli propaganda be turned down a notch now?

Ayatollah is still the Supreme Leader of Iran... that won't change anytime soon

**EDIT** Something I didn't know, turns out the position is enshrined in their constitution, so there will always be a Supreme Leader who rules the country, the President and everyone else are just puppets.

Just another puppet of the frothing madman.

And probably just as mad, according to his dead son, who killed himself over his fathers ideology:

Hassan Rouhani's son committed suicide in 1991. The official line about his suicide was that he suffered from a broken heart, but Dr. Nourizadeh divulges the existence of a suicide note that read: "I loathe your regime, your lies, your corruption, your religion, your hypocrisy and dissimulation [taqqiyeh]. I am disgusted with having to live in such an environment and have to daily lie to my friend by claiming that my father is not cut from the same cloth as the regime elite and chieftains...and that in reality his heart is with the people, while I know the truth to be otherwise. When I see you kissing the hand of Khamenei, I am nauseated..."

The position is in constitution but after his death, there will be a huge dispute over who is going to rule after him! It's speculated there will be a leadership council of some kind, although no one knows what will happen for sure!

If people show their full support for a candidate, the elected president with the support of people has the power to confront Leader. The Leader re-instated Ahmadinejad 4 years ago with vote rigging because he was afraid of huge anticipation and support of people for Mosavi!
In this election Rouhani surprisingly could manage to get the support of people in less that two weeks and win the election. Since two of moderate and respected previous presidents of Iran support him, he might be able to do some good. Although he needs at least 2-3 years to undo the mistakes have done in the past 8 years.
PS: In regards to president being a puppet, Rouhani and every official in Iran believe in leadership of Ayatollah so we cannot expect them to move drastically toward democracy or confront the Leader openly, But obviously there is a huge difference between a trained dog of Ayatollah like Jalili or Ahmadinejad and a moderate technocrat like Rouhani.

Lool... Nourizadeh is more of a science fictioninst than a political essayist!

There already are 2 councils that actually govern. The Assembly/Council of Experts and the Guardian Council.

the council of experts is just a formal council but the guardian council (which is responsible for evaluating and approving candidates for important elections and overseeing the government and parliaments work) is very powerful! But the guardian council is strongly under influence of the leader!

contradiction right there

So now what? I suppose some here think they will stop their nuclear weapons program?

Marine let me show you something interesting while you find us proof of this nuclear program. All i want is 2 things to even entertain your idea.

1. What rocket will they use? do they have a rocket capable of reaching israel before it gets shot down?
2. How would they conduct a test of a nuclear device without someone finding out?
North korea for instance, actually conduct tests, now i would assume there is a reason to test nuclear bombs and you must also be certain the rocket won't fail and you end up nuking yourself. Testing is vital, o yes benjamin gave us such an amazing view on how far iran are to making the nuclear bomb. I know it explained it perfectly remind me of americans showing the UN the wmd trucks, of course his amazing drawing left out delivery of said device. The chances of iran being able to launch a nuke without it getting shot, wait there isn't a chance. So while you are busy proving to us iran want a nuclear weapon i will show you an interesting theory, rather scary one actually. You can also look into the nuclear reator they have manage to put online as marine. Impressive that they managed to do that with sanctions.

Ever thought that perhaps Russia or China will supply the rocket? What about NK? What about anyone else like Afghanistan or Pakistan?
How would they conduct it? Who is to say that once they have it they wont conduct it? What about using tactical nukes? Ones that do not require long range rockets?
No wait lets just accept the honourable Iran, lets not listen to the best intelligence agency in the world, Mossad.
Lol, you guys are so against Israel and the US that you wont look at the reality until it slaps you in the face.
You think they will shoot down nuclear weapons that are transported in person?
I actually hope they get the weapons and use them, then we will see what you have to say.

You will need to read the article. So al queda are rated as worst terror group, they are saudi backed who are friends with the US. So the US declared war on terror bush made a wonderful speech, linkin park make it epic, available for download. Google it.

Now you are worried about iran and you stated they have ambitions for a nuclear bomb. Ok so this sunni terror group is rated as the worst and most effective terror group. No other group have perfected the suicide bomb and i must say the car bombs are pretty impressive, they are linked to the taliban who specialize in road side bombs. So obama and benjamin chill in their expensive hotel room and reckon let's arm this horrific group who kill civilians for fun because they can't remove assad unless we help. Now benjamin agrees. So israel and the US are partnered with a terror group who kill innocents for fun everyday in many countries.

Now this is where it gets interesting marine. Once the US and israel have taken out assad and al queda declare victory but the US and israel fail to ensure the chemical weapons are destroyed. Al queda sit in a country with chemical weapons. Does that sound like a plan that is the best for israel? So they moan about iran but happily support a terror group. Explain to me how you can possibly be more worried about iran when alqueda are backed and supported by israel and the US.

Marine in terms of the war on terror, would it be over do you think and the US should withdraw the drones and troops because surely when you are arming and partnering with a terror group the war has ended and you are now supporting the enemy or am i wrong? supporting terror is fine, maybe i didn't read the fine print that said supporting terror is allowed. Although you are so worried about iran i doubt you even knew what is happening because you are so focused on a country that poses no threat to israel?

So iran support hezbollah a terror group and you have an issue with that but i doubt you will have an issue with israel supporting the most effective terror group out there.

Seems a bit odd and i am sure you will say i hate israel and totally ignore that your beloved country is going to be supporting a terror group that kills innocent people for fun every day.

Now you expect me to believe israel are innocent when they would rather have the worst terror group running syria instead of assad who was really no threat. Typically this can only be a plan benjamin and obama could come up with, i would expect an announcement that the war on terror is over and they will be supporting terror for now. Although for the hardcore supporters they will find an excuse for supporting a group that kills innocent people for fun.

Lol Mossad have said on countless times, Iran is no threat. Ha ha!
Iran will not attack Israel with any nuclear weapons, stop being a warmongering fool!
