AGANG SA leader Dr Mamphela Ramphele on Tuesday launched a thinly veiled attack on the Democratic Alliance (DA), saying the party "just did not understand" that the scars of racism had not entirely healed.
Dr Ramphele also said 41% of eligible voters had not voted in the 2009 elections, which was a "big statement of lack of confidence in the existing political parties".
Prior to Dr Ramphele setting up her political platform, the DA tried to woo her, but the talks collapsed albeit at an advanced stage.
It is understood that DA leader Helen Zille was prepared to step down and hand leadership of the party to the struggle veteran in an apparent bid to change the face of the main opposition, which the African National Congress (ANC) has time and again described as a "white party".
But earlier this year, Dr Ramphele said coalition talks with Ms Zille had continued. Their relationship goes back to when Ms Zille was head of communications and Dr Ramphele vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town. It is believed that Agang SA is in talks with a number of other parties besides the DA on a possible coalition ahead of next year’s elections.
On Saturday, Dr Ramphele will launch Agang as a political party to contest the 2014 elections. This comes amid fears the new party could further fragment the opposition, giving the ANC the upper hand. Speaking at a Cape Town press club yesterday, Dr Ramphele said she had held talks with the DA.
She said the party had wanted to "co-opt" her. "The DA and I disagree, not because they have a different kind of policy position, but they don’t understand just that … the scars of racism in this country have not completely healed," Dr Ramphele said.
"Those wounds … there may be a scar, but underneath, if you touch that scar, it bleeds. Particularly in the Cape, we need to get real."
