AGANG SA leader Dr Mamphela Ramphele on Tuesday launched a thinly veiled attack on the Democratic Alliance (DA), saying the party "just did not understand" that the scars of racism had not entirely healed.

Dr Ramphele also said 41% of eligible voters had not voted in the 2009 elections, which was a "big statement of lack of confidence in the existing political parties".

Prior to Dr Ramphele setting up her political platform, the DA tried to woo her, but the talks collapsed albeit at an advanced stage.

It is understood that DA leader Helen Zille was prepared to step down and hand leadership of the party to the struggle veteran in an apparent bid to change the face of the main opposition, which the African National Congress (ANC) has time and again described as a "white party".

But earlier this year, Dr Ramphele said coalition talks with Ms Zille had continued. Their relationship goes back to when Ms Zille was head of communications and Dr Ramphele vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town. It is believed that Agang SA is in talks with a number of other parties besides the DA on a possible coalition ahead of next year’s elections.

On Saturday, Dr Ramphele will launch Agang as a political party to contest the 2014 elections. This comes amid fears the new party could further fragment the opposition, giving the ANC the upper hand. Speaking at a Cape Town press club yesterday, Dr Ramphele said she had held talks with the DA.

She said the party had wanted to "co-opt" her. "The DA and I disagree, not because they have a different kind of policy position, but they don’t understand just that … the scars of racism in this country have not completely healed," Dr Ramphele said.

"Those wounds … there may be a scar, but underneath, if you touch that scar, it bleeds. Particularly in the Cape, we need to get real."

Bloody ANC... erm, i mean AGANG :erm:

Oh well, one way to get votes is to accuse the other side of racism. Cheap, but hey, free speech n all that.

Ramphele is late to the party and has a lot of catching up to do. Will be years before she can achieve what the DA has done. If ever.

You don't believe its a fair comment given some of the news around the DA this week? And IMO, she is not accusing the DA of being racist, she is saying they don't understand the scars left by our past and how even the mere mention of some words or dreamt up figures about our reality to day can can cause hurt.

Wait I thought Zille was a struggle veteran.

Hmmm, good politicking in terms of the current landscape... Even if it highlights the mindset that is holding back this country.

Not at all considering most of the people I work with are not even white. People are easily sucked into the propaganda the ANC spins. Perception and all that.

Re this weeks news. You dont think the DA approach in dealing with that rogue councilor was sufficient? How else could they have responded that could have shown they are more serious with dealing with race issues? I thought suspending the guy showed that they take this seriously.

Ill let the members in Mdantsane know that they dont know about that. Sure they`ll take her seriously.

What special ability grant Ramphele the power to "understand racism" which the DA lack?

To be honest, I didn't see that. I saw it more as someone putting their ANC lessons to use...

Oh well, we are welcome to our perspectives. In my world, saying someone does not understand racism... is the race card, but yeah, Im not going to spend 100000 posts defending my perspective. If you cant see it. Great.

So basically Agang represents the same policies as the DA but with an acceptable black face the masses would be comfortable voting for.

Everyone wants Cape Town.

And...

She said the party had wanted to "co-opt" her. "The DA and I disagree, not because they have a different kind of policy position, but they don’t understand just that … the scars of racism in this country have not completely healed," Dr Ramphele said.

Going back to this:

At times, sparks flew. At the final meeting at Leeuwenhof, Zille’s official residence in Cape Town, racial innuendo entered the fray.

Ramphele insisted she would “not be the Dlamini family who was coming to stay with the Zille family”, adding that it might be difficult for others to understand, but DA federal chairperson Dr Wilmot James would

I still want to know the whole issue with House Dlamini, the reigning Swazy Royal Family, do Ramphele have a history (negative/positive) with this people? Nobody could provide me an answer or has this something to do with apartheid…

I agree with her. SABC replayed Miracle Rising on Monday, I watched it again and the scene that pisses me off the most was when the police drove into the township in an unmarked truck with them hiding in boxes at the back, and then they reveal themselves and start shooting randomly. Why did they do that?

Ok then... incidentally, I think that we agree on the purpose of her statement- cheap politicking.

What relevance does this have in this thread?
