I have been having LOTS of problems with my Telkom ADSL 5102G Router.

I tried to find firmware for it from telkom (like hell). Anyhoo after many unsucsessful attempts, I found that Billion Tech makes the 5102G (same router, diff box).

I got brave and decided to give their firmware a shot, and who'ed guss, IT WORKED, the probs I had were gone and my ADSL speed actually increased.

Get the firmware here.

Just remember that if you upgrade you firmware, the config software that comes with you router will no longer work, you will have to use the routers web interface, which is at http://192.168.1.254 (its not 10.0.0.2 anymore).

But just be careful, and don't rush it, you don't want your router being reduced to a fancy paperwhight now do you?

It worked for me, but only do this if you are prepared to buy a new router, you never know what could go wrong.

Yes thats correct. Telkom buys the Billion routers in bulk packages them with their crap packaging and firmware.

Just s little bit of advice for those who might make a mistake:

I flashed my router with the wrong firmware and the only way I fixed it was by to Telnet to the router and type "sys romreset"

Just be carefull when upgrading with this F/W. Remember to select annex A if you really need to download it. This is international F/W and is different than SA F/W. So if something goes wrong you are going to have a hard time fixing it............

It its not broken don't fix it!

But in the case it was broken. But you have most probably voided you warrenty becuase you are not using the incorrect firmware.

I've been using the telkom 5102g with Billion firmware for the last 3 months and it's working much better than with the Telkom F/W. Much more stable.

My 5102G used to FREEK when I plugged my SMC EZ Switch 10/100 into it, ever since I upgraded to Billion Firmware its been perfect.

FYI, ANYTHING you buy from Telkom is broken, even before you open the box.

Telkom/Billion ADSL 5102G upgraded...successfully?

I've upgraded it as per your suggestion, as I was having loads of problems with random disconnections, slow and erratic download speeds (although there are probably other causes for this) and a generally crap surfing/downloading experience, something I had become accustomed to for about a month, and after the (tricky, I might add) install, things seem to be a bit more stable for now (touches large wooden desk).

Just some points, or rather, things I experienced:

1. Don't forget to push the reset button behind the modem for a few seconds after the firmware is installed/modem is flashed
2. Even after this, and adjusting the user/password settings in the web interface at the above (Billion) url (in place of 10.0.0.2), I couldn't get connected
3. Turned the modem off & on, lights flashed for about 4-5 min, seemed to settle (particularly the PPP light)
4. Re-entered user/password settings, and SUDDENLY it worked!
5. I should add that although the connection is stable now, I did _not_ experience faster speeds than before

...so don't expect it to work immediately (this is a bloody pc, after all, it's supposed to be complicated and time-consuming) - you have to, as mentioned above, be a bit patient, tinker with things conservatively, and it should work, provided you have the right (Annex A) firmware file.

Good luck!

I need to update the firmware of my Telkom 5102G ADSL router. Is the above mentioned firmware update (from Billion) the only update which is available for this router or does 2C Telecoms have firmware updates available for it?

Sorry about not having the Firmware on our website => it WAS there, but our (quite possibly soon to be Ex) website designer seems to have lost the button during one of his site upgrades  The Telkom approved F/W can be obtained by calling our helpdesk (0860 224357) or if you give me an email address, i will send it to you .... for future reference, we have sent someone to ignite a fire under the web designer, so the F/W should be on the website soon ...

When I phone your helpdesk at above number I am told that the original firmware that comes with the modem is the only available firmware and that 2C does not supply upgrade firmware as new routers are released - please confirm

not 100 % correct ..... we do supply upgrades of firmware for all of our products, but in terms of our supply arangement with Telkom, we have to have Telkom aproval for any firmware we release... currently, for the Telkom 5102G, the firmware that the units were supplied with is the latest aproved....... there is new firmware under evaluation, but it has not been approved yet ... i see an email from you .... let me send you somthing .....

I've just upgraded using the Telkom approved firmware. Had no problems and it even remembered all my settings. It seems to have fixed my issues of connecting my two laptops via WiFi. Will update once I see how the stablity is.

Had to do a reset of the modem as it caused the admin screen to break. Working fine now but had to reenter all my settings.
