Any known workaround for getting my Divx and Xvid movies to play in Media Center edition? I have media player 10 installed which plays them fine, I was under the impression that Media Center uses the installed Media Player to play files, but just realised that it does not support 3rd party codecs. I'm building a media pc for the kids, I'd really like to get this working. Failing that, perhaps anyone knows of an alternative to Media center Edition?

danke.

Never used XP MC2005, but Vista Ultimate (includes Media Center & MPlayer 11) + Divx 6.4 (codec) seem to work nicely together.

Can view any divx/xvid vid through Media Center interface + preview thumbnail work too.

What codecs are you using?

I have no problems playing anything except for flv (youtube/google video) files using K-Lite mega codec pack.

I've just installed the divx and xvid codecs from their sites, as well as the ac3filter.

xpmce plays divx just fine is you have a supported decoder installed.
normally, ffdshow does the job just fine.

if it doesnt, then there is something else wrong with your machine.
been using it (and know people using it) for over 2 years now, and trust me, divx/xvid etc isnt a problem

i tried ffdshow, made no diff. when i select a movie it loads for a sec and then just says "finished". going to try klite quick. media player on it's own plays it fine...

it is because of all those codec packs that you now sit in the ****.
best to get rid of them all, and all their remnants (or probably reinstall, as that may end up being the quicker option) then just plonk on your mpeg2 decoder, ffdshow, ac3filter and stay away from codec packs.

jeesh i give up, that didn't work either. is there any config involved after installing ffdshow?

search mplayerhq at google, follow the site, download the windows version and the windows codecs pack, extract the codecs into a folder codecs under the mplayer folder itself. the new mplayer has a GUI, else drag and drop a file you want to play onto the shortcut. you can make mplayer the default player, so you only need to double click the media. the program was written for linux, but now runs on all OSes. I have not found anything it cant play, old rm, flv, mkv, xvid, x264, divx is supported. i use ubuntu linux and mplayer for a media centre, 950 duron with 256ram, works perfectly, though windows could not be installed on it, hardware error of some sort.

thanks for the advice edc, but how would that enable me to play my divx/xvid rips in Windows Media Center Edition 2005?

mplayer, the software, runs on windows also, it plays any kind of media you can find and dig up.

so dont use windows media player, use software that doesnt stick drm and propriety wmv codecs in your face.

so, what files are these you are trying to play back? how convinced are you they are divx etc?

i'm not talking about media player, but Windows Media Center, the OS itself has an interface for browsing and playing media. Like Front Row for Mac. But thanks anyway.

not my feet either...

just downloaded movies (trailers of course) and backups I've made of my dvd collection.

i'm reinstalling now, drivers+updates etc, then the cracked media player 11, then ffdshow. will see if that works.

You aren't trying to run the hacked mc which "runs" on XP Professional or Home are you?
