About 6 months ago I investigated MTN's VPN acces on the data network. I realized that Vodacom provides this service for free and MTN charges for it.

What is the current state of affairs?

....if MTN does provide it for free as well, is there anything I should know to get it working? Any special APNs? Maybe one should call in to have something setup?

Good day,

MTN don't charge a subscription for the MTN VPN APN if you with MTNSP then PM Snakepit and he can email APN provisioning and ask them to provision you we do not charge for the VPN APN at this stage

Unrestricted APN

Does anyone know why mtn does not allow a public ip address or do we have to phone them to activate it and get charged. If i am not mistaken a while ago on another thread mtn data dude said that according to his knowledge mtn does not block their network.Tried this last night and no go software tells me that the ip address is not a public one.I know the guys at vodacom are busy finalising their unrestricted apn and it is gonna be a free service all you need to do is activate it ,so that one can actually use the internet the way it was meant to be used, one massive network with no restrictions. Is mtn gonna be doing the same or is this a no go area????

well i read somewhere.. that they charge u like R20 per minute if they catch u using VOIP over gprs/edge/3g..

was an odd one to read

Good day,

We do supply a APN called the MTNVPN APN which is not charged for at the moment should you want it activated you have to go via your SP and they active the VPN APN for you and there is no subscription charge at this stage also we currently do not support public IP addressing commercially, As far as I know, Marketing are investigating a solution for this, however they are worried about the impact on our corporate mobility business. I've approached marketing for a more up to date response though.

Okay here's the reply

Marketing have agreed to supply the MTNVPN APN free of charge in terms of no subscription at this stage so should you want a secure APN connection you can call your SP and they will send a email to #APN provisioning to provision you on the MTNVPN APN hope that will be in order in the meantime will keep you guys posted on any further developments

Are you trying to access your company's VPN?
I am able to access my company VPN through MTN using the regular APNs (MyMTN and internet). With Vodacom, I was unable to connect using their internet APN, so they put me on the internetvpn APN and thereafter it worked.

:) Glad it did

Using vnc over gprs is too slow.
I suppose it really depends what you're trying to do remotely, but I looked after a couple of Windows servers remotely for years over a 56K dial-up, just had to change the Remote Desktop settings accordingly; 800x600 8-bit display, no sound, no desktop background, no themes, etc. Switching from 56K to EDGE was great, but things haven't really got better since HSDPA roll-out.

I tested. It works. Did not have to call anyone or change anything. I think MTN should somehow make the customers aware that this is not only for MTN business clients anymore. My perception was always that Vodacom have been getting more data customers just because of this.

Doing a quick search for 'VPN' on the MTN website only got me to this article.

It really does not advertise the possibilities of VPN to all consumers.

Well you see MTN Marketing are still deciding if they want to charge for it or not as there also could be a threat on Corporate mobility but I know what you're saying

Nobody is going to pay for something at one company that they can get for free at another company. Nobody cares if the MTN solution gives you more reliability or support or added services or whatever. The Vodacom solution is free and it works.

Maby MTN has fooled many customers into paying for this already...
