This is a newbie posting.

I've been looking to improve my d/l speeds since 64k is no longer cutting it for me. Then today a colleague of mine mention that since I have ISDN at home, I just need to replace the ISDN modem with an ADSL modem and then contact Telkom to request them to switch over the lines to ADSL.

So far all my friends and other colleagues are not certain if it's this simple. Anyone know any better?

You have to first have your isdn phone line converted to a standard pots telephone line before you can have adsl enabled on the line. Telkom does not do adsl over ISDN.

Yes unluckily this is the current position in SA. AFAIK you will also be charged a conversion fee to change your ISDN line to analogue of about R200 in addition to the ADSL installation cost of R437.

I converted from ISDN to ADSL and it only took about 3.5 months.
If there is a spare DSLAM port at the exchange or street box then it's pretty painless ... well except for the installation costs.
It's just a case of them sending a techie to come do a line test, plug your line into the DSLAM port and then check that the line syncs at your premises.

The fact that you have ISDN is a good sign - you obviously don't live too far from the exchange for it to work so ADSL will also work.

They did my conversion from ISDN back to analogue then to ADSL in a couple of hours - then again I was the first install in my area so finding a port in the dslam wasnt exactly difficult.

@Paul_S - are you sure that distance from the exchange to the TA is as important with ISDN?

ISDN has a maximum distance of about 5.5km
ADSL 1 can handle up to 5.4km @ 1 mbps (although with Telkom's crap wiring this is debatable.) Once you reach about 6km the speed falls off to nothing.

If he has ISDN working then ADSL will also work.

Except if he is 5.45 km from the exchange. :p
