Social Networking, How is S.A faring?

With all this hype abt social networks taking over the big media as sources of news and marketing sources, howz S.A faring?

Are we trapped in a time warp or are we moving with the times making sure that we take over how information gets to us?

Big media have an agenda to drive...I do not want to be part of the collateral damage.

Interesting question. There is an increasing interest in Web 2.0 and New Media in South Africa, but traditional media houses are not always interested in these new trends. We do however see an increased interest in MySpace in Youtube from local Internet users, which sadly mean that South Africa is losing out on that revenue, skills in developing and running such sites etc…

It is the cost of running these types of services which makes it unfeasible to get off the ground. Thanks DoC, Telkom and ICASA :(
 
There's a very hush hush project going on as we speak (it's not moving into closed beta stage) that should help SA get onto the market wrt social networking so all is not lost.

There are people out there working on this stuff, there are just numerous obstacles to overcome.
 
interesting that you guys mention this, i have developed scripting for a myspace type project (for a private entity) and the thought crossed my mind of making a SA (only) site. Would it take off?

It might but its a relatively small market compared to the rest of the world etc. Read an article the other day though predicting numerous niche social networking sites rather than catch-alls like Myspace, apparently Cisco's even investing in it now. So in time it'll probably happen I guess. ;) Personally I don't see the attraction of Myspace.
