I am looking for a free registry cleaner.

Any advise?

Thanks

I wouldn't expect too much from cleaning your registry to solve anything - even back in the days of Win 95 it didn't do anything much.

TuneUp 2007 is really good - you can download it as trial software and use it for 30 days.

Has saved me a few times.... :)

Registry Mechanic is good too, but you also have to pay for it. Personally I wouldn't trust anything that's free to modify your registry.

I have CCleaner and Registry Mechanic. CCleaner is great for "cleaning" [cache, temp files etc], and does find alot of "orphans" in the registry. But there's a difference between CLEAN and FIX and CCleaner doesn't really seem to be good at the fixing registry part...for this i use Registry Mechanic.

If i run CCleaner and it does a good clean and i run Registry Mechanic directly afterwards, it will always find stuff CCleaner never looked at [i'm talking 100+ stuff] . Same thing with other free registry "cleaners" . The cleaners only look for missing shortcuts or entries of software no longer on the system, it doesn't usually go deeper than that.

Do you need a Registry Cleaner?

I am running Vista. I got some error message ( I forget what) but clicking thru I ended up on a Windows "partner" site where I downloaded a program called "Registry Booster2" Then this program finds all these "errors" (over 150) in the registry but will only fix 15 of them unless I buy the program for US$30. What's this all about? Do I need a program to keep my registry in order?

You most probably have a virus on your system, Windows won't tell you to go to a random 'partner' site.
I would recommend uninstalling whatever program you downloaded, start up in safe mode, and scan for rootkits. there is a good scanner but I can't remember the name.

I've had good experiences with Registry Mechanic and the RegClean tool from Microsoft. I'm not using CCleaner because it also shows stuff that should not be deleted i.e. you really must know what can be deleted.

Each to his own. Note that ALL of the registry cleaners are seriously over-hyped, so don't expect miracles.

I uninstalled it and scanned for viruses (McAfee) and none found.

no ways. doesn't have to be a virus at all. when you install and uninstall apps and move files and folders to different directories, the registry still has these old locations of these files and apps and these are the registry errors that accumulates and these are the errors that the software picks up. things like "most recent", "missing files" and "invalid locations" are amongst the most registry errors. i used all of the software posted above and i'm still not convinced by any of them. i would rather use a trusted app like norton for this. i would however not use norton for anything else.

Yes but 'windows' told him to visit a 'partner site' to download RegistryCleaner2?

I have had stuff like this before and it turned out to be a RootKit.

ok, fair enough, but what is the actual issue here? registry errors or malware?

The first guy wanted a registry cleaner. He got his answer I think. Then another guy, Londo, asked about errors, which could be malware.
