Winter - June, July, August?
The 21st of June is the winter solstice and is the point when we stop moving away from the sun (in the southern hemisphere) and start moving towards it.
June, July & August, are called winter because they are usually the "coldest" months of the year. For us in the south during May and July, the sun is in roughly at the same point in Latitude, Yet May is much warmer than July.
This is because our part of the earth is slowly losing its retained heat in May, and only starting to regain it again in July.
We have a habit of tying seasons into months as a whole.
This is not the case - much better to work off of the solstices and the equinoxes.

and December 21 is the winter solstice in the north - this date does move according to axis shift - back in the Bard's day it was on the 24
