I got my hands (legally) on a newish second hand DSTV decoder to replace my ancient one. Is installing it as easy as putting in my smartcard or is it more complicated than that?

You'll need a letter from the seller with all the information about the decoder verifying the sale.

You can just use a simple letter, heres an example.
.Buyer's Letter
TO: Multichoice
I, <Buyer's Name>, ID number < ID Number>, hereby declare that DSTV decoder number <Decoder No.> was purchased by me From <Seller Name>.
Kind Regards
