Why wen my sim is not in my fone and sum1 send me a MMS and when i put sim in to get it i cnt receive MMS's but i just tried to check if my Mms works by sending 1to myself nd i did get it, confused...Damn wherz my otha MMS msgs :'( cn sum1 help pls
 
:| not sure what you're after, cause that doesn't look english...

But... basically, Virgin sucks with everything.
 
The problem with MMSs is that they take a long time to arrive. I remember Vodacom kept sending us SPAM (Smiley faces campaign) and they annoyed us all because they were arriving in the early hours of the morning. Also, for some reason, sending messages between networks can sometimes be problematic (rivalry?).
 
I've been from Vodacom to Virgin to MTN, and MTN are the only network I haven't had MMS problems. I gave up trying with Vodacom & Virgin.

I would also like to know. When you get an MMS you also get an SMS that initiates the connection and downloads the MMS. If it's somewhere this can not take place like in a datacard or modem the SMS gets stored on your SIM. When you put it back in your phone the SMS is already delivered. You should check the SMS on your SIM which should tell you where you can download your MMS.

Now this presents a very difficult situation, and I must say, I have not come across it. The behaviour will also differ depending on the phone make.
I would suggest a couple of things.

1. If it is possible, can you setup the Datacard to reject incoming sms? If you can, it will sort your problem. Maybe you don't want to?
2. (I will 1st need to experiment with this option) Set your phone's "Multimedia Retrieval" setting to Manual not Automatic. (I can with my Symbian Nokia, not sure about other phones). When you put your SIM back in the phone, go to the inbox and manually retreive the MMS.
3. (The one you don't want to hear). Get a dedicated SIM for data.
 
I simulated the situation with a legacy phone (not MMS capable). It seems that the old phone/datacard messes up the WAP Push sms (binary sms that informs the phone about the MMS).
When I put back the SIM int he original phone, the phone did not understand the sms that was in the inbox.

I will try to get hold of a datacard to see what is the other possibilities.
 
I will see what I can do regarding the resending of the sms(WAP Push) every few hours, to make sure the MMS will eventually be delivered.

Now this is essentially a design flaw of the whole system. This usually happens when newer technologies are pushed onto older ones - in this case the mms over sms system. The correct way would have been to have the system check if the phone is mms capable and to deliver the mms over the sms system with the phone treating it as an mms instead of an sms but I don't know if the gsm architecture would allow this. If the phone is not mms capable it should send an sms informing the user of the mms and then retry sending it later.

Ur not the only one with that problem.I get the same problem with a N70
 
It is not viable to send an MMS over sms, thats why the MMS system was designed. A sms is max 160bytes. to send a MMS of 100k would take over 600 sms!!!!

The sms serves the purpose to "notify" the phone that a MMS was sent to it. Then the phone initiates an HTTP connection over GPRS and downloads the MMS from the Server.
In most cases the delivery of the notification sms is transparent to the user.

I am looking to resending the notifications often so when you use your sim in a datacard, that you will still get your MMS when you put it back in the phone.
 
The phone can also initiate a GSM connection, essentially receiving it the same way as an sms.
 
What is a GSM connection?

There is only:
- GPRS
- EDGE (just an enhancement of GPRS)
- 3G/HSDPA
- CSD call

A few years ago there were still a lot of phones with mms but no gprs, I assumed they were using the plain GSM system instead of the packet data system. Apparently sms uses something called the mobile application part of the GSM protocols. Find it interesting that manufacturers didn't allow MMSes to be delivered the same way.
