Morning all,

It is with alot of sadness that I am informing you that I will be retiring my MacBook Pro :(

With my current work situation in the M$ environment, it just makes more sense to work on a native M$ OS (I don't want to use bootcamp, as then I don't have the MAC OS in any case).

I will however invest in either a Mac Mini or iMac in the near future, so if anyone is interested in a 17" MBP CD, 120Gb HDD and 2Gb RAM, let me know

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning behind not using bootcamp - sounds like cutting off your nose and all that.

If I use bootcamp, I will be running everything via native Windows OS, which means apart from using certain programs on the MAC OS side, I will mostly be using Windows. If I am busy in OS X, and need to quickly look at something from work, it is sitting on the bootcamp side.

So at this point it makes more sense for me to use a XP/Vista machine for work, and get an iMac/mini for home use (editing, movie/music streaming, etc)

LandyMan - price? What CPU?

2.16Ghz Core Duo
120Gb Hdd
2Gb RAM (standard is 1Gb)
Wireless Mighty Mouse
Office for Mac 2004

Dunno what price ... I think what I have in mind might be too high. What do you guys think I can ask?

My HP is on its last legs. In fact, the one memory slot died yesterday. :(

But 17" is bigger than what I have in mind. In fact, I'm waiting for Apple bring out the MBP in a size similar to the Sony Vaio TZ series and in particular this one.

Imagine a MacBook Pro in that size packaging? I wouldn't mind having the built-in 3G/HSDPA either.

They used to make a 12" Powerbook. Awesome form factor.

Yeah I know, and I was burning to pick up a secondhand one. But my experience with my Mini has shown that the 12" G4 is going to be just a tad too slow for my needs.

That 12" is nothing like the ppc mini - worlds apart. In fact if I could find one with a decent price tag attached I'd grab one tomorrow. :)

BTW, bwana, have you seen one of these Sonys? They're way smaller than the 12" PowerBook. They're the same width, if not narrower, and the screen is much lower (and body much shorter). They're also quite a bit thinner

I would actually be able to take it on a flight and fit it between my belly and the seat in front of me :-)

Probably seen them in passing but truth be told I go for the bigger screen. In fact the only reason I would want a 12" Powerbook is that it would fit in my camera bag and still run all my software.

As it is I'm probably going to have to try and trade my 17" pb for my missus 12" ibook. Wish me luck :)

The big screen used to be an attraction for me, but after carrying my notebook in a backpack to work for a few weeks, and trying to work on the train/plane often, I decided there's something to be said for smaller screens. But then, I don't do photo stuff :-)

As you said - faster cpu and double the graphics. How much ram can the mini take? 2gb as well?

OK, fair enough - 2GB ram would make a difference. As for the video, the graphics hardware won't make a difference for the video. The ATi in the Mini is way more than fast enough to play any kind of video - it just throws a 2d image on the screen and maybe scale it up. I had the same graphics in my old AthlonXP with a much higher res screen - playing 720p wasn't a problem.

The decoding happens in the CPU, and this is where the Mini falls short. With mplayer I can let it output both audio and video to dummy devices, so I let the player just decode it. The output shows you if the video and audio is still in sync, and on the Mini it goes out almost immediately.

Ok, so after you two are done hijacking my thread :D, what do you guys think I should ask for my MBP?
