So I downgrade to XP and the machine works like a dream :) However, I still get a "Unknown device" in device manager  Cannot understand it cos I've installed all the drivers off HP site. Any1 here has the same notebook ?

Never mind, I found the fix: You need to install the Microsoft UAA bus driver for audio as well  Sound worked before ...

Me,

Don't worry about it, I think it's some Power management device not supported by XP. All works as expected without it.

here's a tip. if you want to double your battery life, load Ubuntu 7.10 on it.

I get 2.5 hours on the standard battery and 4.5 our of the long life one. And it's SOOOOOOO much quicker.

I've been OS hopping for the past 3 months on mine.

vista - slow and very low battery life (takes 7 minutes to boot, even longer to shut down)
XP - little less slow and low battery life
SUSE - don't like the lack of proprietary drivers for wireless
Mandriva - wireless no work, resolution all screwy
PCLinuxOS - STABLE and FAST!, but having trouble updating from repositories, but the updates work. battery life same as XP. Will give next version a try since everything works out of the box
Kubuntu 7.10 - unstable and buggy power management
Ubuntu 7.10 - perfectly stable and fast- automatix2 solves all the codec and media issues. MASSIVE battery life and fan rarely needs to spin

I upgraded 3 of these recently and yes you have to install both sound drivers for some reason. So much smoother with XP.

Which HP 530 do you have? I'm guessing it has the 945GM chipset, which means that you probably have Intel GMA 950 graphics and Intel High Definition Audio.

When it says it can't find the device, do you mean when you search, or when you try run the executable driver file ?

both ways...... with driver from HP site for the 945gm chipset..... and that is correct you know my laptop...... u got any solutions?

Use CPU-Z to check that your hardware corresponds. It should work. Which HP 530 do you have: The Core Duo T2xxx version or the Celeron version?

Ok, T2600 version should have GMA950, no problem. Don't know what to tell you man... Are you sure you have the correct drivers? If you check System Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager, does it give you any extra insight?

Something sounds fishy, because I think the Video driver should continue, even if it can't find the device

CPU-Z should be able to tell you what North bridge and South bridge you have, which determines what drivers you need for sound, graphics, etc...

positive I have the correct driver cos its the same one I would use for vista previously just the xp version.... i double checked that..... and it is starting to get to me....all i need is the sound and the display to work not worried about the modem at all

What does device manager tell you?

And I had no problem getting my HP 530 to run XP (when I had it). Was a pleasure.

Check in the BIOS... Maybe something's amiss there?

Silly question, but have you installed the Microsoft UAA driver?
