Broadband Infraco a big budget winner

Money won't make any difference if the DoC and IcAsA keeps up their current pace in licensing InfraCo
 
One must ask, in the previous years before those whole 2010, where did that R1.4 Billion go to?

Seriously, suddenly SA is rich enough to be budgeting millions, hiring more police, building a subway, budgeting for more power stations, building stadiums... Where is all this money coming from? Why wasn't this done 5 years go?

Hmm .. our annual GDP is currently over $255,000,000,000 (nominal), if we generously assume an average 4% annual GDP growth (in reality it's higher) then five years prior it must've been about $210,000,000,000 or so, that's a GDP increase of at least $45 billion (+/- R300 billion) over five years; not sure how much of that translates to extra tax revenue but if it's say 20% then that suggests about R60 billion 'extra' just from economic growth. In the meantime tax collection efficiency has also been basically consistently and continually increased for the last ten years or so so they're drawing more taxes off the existing base GDP portion too. (I don't know what the real tax collection figures are but shouldn't be too hard to check.) Other factors are that we've been coasting on the apartheid government's infrastructure investments for quite some time (since in the old days they really did eg. build enough power stations in advance, countrywide telecomms infrastructure, freight and passenger rail transport, bus transport services, ports/harbours, national road networks, schools, water management, dams etc. etc. - nearly all old government infrastructure investments we've just been coasting on, it's much cheaper to maintain than install and in most cases we don't even maintain the stuff anymore, just pushing it to the brink of collapse). Then there's current government underspend which is in fact scary and disgusting. In some respects the money was there in the past too but the old government in fact overspent on expensive projects like the rooivalk and nuclear weapons and missile programs etc. that drained more wealth than they generated, could perhaps have been better spent on e.g. subways or more schools back then. Five years ago billions were going to line the pockets of ANC officials and their close friends.

Infraco is yet another BS useless communist piece of crap that will drain our taxpayer money and make everyone poorer except a few corrupt government officials.

?? And you're saying? That that's another government disaster? Or are you trying to say they did spend money on something good? Actually Sentech's 'main thing' is TV/radio signal broadcasting, the infrastructure of which was created almost entirely by the old government and NOT the ANC, so the ANC didn't really "create" Sentech as such, except maybe as a 'wrapper'. More recently they tried to branch out their business but I think it's safe to say that effort can be likened to a pile of crud (*anyone* want my MyWireless modem? I'll pay R50 to take it off my hands :)).
 
THey could have spent R5 to send a letter of retrenchment to Ivy with the same effect

Interesting, quick 2 minute logic session:
The DPE aka government controls the majority share in Telkom which has (lets be very generous) 15% penetration...
The private sector has Vodacom,MTN, CellC, Virgin Mobile which have (lets be very selfish) 90% penetration...

[sarcasm]Clearly as you can all see from the logic above government involvement is a necessity to stimulate higher penetration... Keep on getting involved governmen...[/sarcasm]
 
Infraco was started by the same guy who said that there wouldn't be an electricity crisis. Excuse me for not being optimistic...
