We're sorry, YouTube is no longer available.

Broadband is for web browsing and email alone, you-tube is “abuse of bandwidth ” (paid for by you or not regardless) and therefore you should stop complaining about nothing.....

Don't beleive me - ask Telscum Demonopolies....

(That was intentional - me not onebrickshort or skeptic or whoever it is that tries to piss everyone off with the random bold words to hijack thread.)

I'm not convinced that Telkom care what hurts youtube... and I'm not sure Youtube can fix what telkom break.
Telkom transparent proxies are a very good reason to use Verizon instead of SAIX.

They throttle Youtube something cronic in this country, go load a movie at youporn.com, you will notice no buffering and the files loads long before you have finished watching it.

I use a youtube add-on for firefox and that sorted out my youtube problems, still takes forever to load a movie so i download it rather.

YouTube is giving a peculiar error rather often these days. Antowan believes it could cost YouTube dearly.

We?re sorry, YouTube is no longer available.

Why would it cost YouTube dearly? From what I understand the problem is with Telkom's transparent proxy servers, not YouTube.

Americans load YouTube without any problems, it's only those of us on SAIX that get that error continuously. The few people abroad that get the error get it for a different reason... they usually have web accelerator software installed (disabling Google Accelerator fixes the problem for them), or they have a firewall or other security software that changes http headers that are sent to that server.

For people in SA to temporarily fix the problem, you need to enable the SAIX cache server in your browser while you're viewing YouTube vids.

It therefore appears to be a problem for Telkom to solve, not necessarily YouTube since this specific problem is at ISP level. Telkom must put Youtube's website on the exception list on their transparent proxy server so the requests go directly to the site; that way the problem will be solved for everyone on SAIX automatically. Will they do it? No, because they'll probably have to setup a committee who will take 2 years just to admit there's a problem in the first place. ;)

Telkom needs to completely disable the transparent proxy for ADSL users in my opinion. We pay for our bandwidth and have the right to access any information at our discretion.

Doesn't matter who or what causes it. If you had a site and your users couldn't reach it for some odd reason you would want to sort it out, right? Your customers are not going to sort it out. They will complain to you perhaps, but they are not going to spend hours on end phoning Telkom. That much I know for sure...

An IS connection maybe a bit slower but its worth it to avoid Telscum's not so transparent proxy.

Another big victim of Telkom's proxies is Rapidshare. Unless you subscribe unnecessarily to the premium service, the 11th most popular website in the world is utterly useless to those on SAIX.

Fix: Use cache.saix.net:8080 for all protocols.

Works best in Firefox.

This is the error i get when i use the proxy details above:

Forbidden
You were denied access because:

Access denied by access control policy.

This is blatant CENSORSHIP by Telkom!!

It is worse than the Chinese - I also believe this is in violation of our constitution.

I have access to both IS and Telkom internet and on IS it works fine but on Telkom they are somehow high-jacking the requests and putting in the message: "We're sorry, this video is no longer available."

Anyone know who we can raise this issue with - ICASA? Constitutional court? Human Rights Council?

Hold your horses. As much as we all love kicking telkom in the nuts, this time its not them, or at least I think it isn't. I'm on IS uncapped and all of yesterday I could not open any Youtube videos, just about all of the videos gave me the same error messages that you folks saw.

It does seem to be working again today though. If IS users are/were suffering from the exact same problem its highly unlikely that this is SAIX/Telkom's fault.
