In desperate need of a neotel/network guru

I got a Neotel connection and would like to enable ICS
I got this working and it is shared
The PC that is connecting to mine is XP
Mine is Vista Home Prem
The connection is a direct RJ45 link between the two
They can see each other and have manual IP's assigned
On the other i added mine as the gateway
Each one can browse the other ones shared folders
The one i want to connect through mine can see the shared connection and says its connected
.....
I can't browse any website from the other PC, as if it really isn't connected
I have a telkom modem/router if that helps me find a simple solution?

Hi, I just had the most frustrating morning doing the above, but XP was the gateway and VISTA did not want play nice.

Check your IPs, your gateway must be x.x.x.1 or x.x.x.2. If not, then it won't work. You can just set your clients (XP) to get auto settings else you need to manually add in the DNS settings too.

We had to repair the VISTA connection a few times this morning before it started working. Check your firewall settings on both PCs too.

With ICS the PC hosting the ICS is assigned an extra task - that of an DHCP server.

On the other PC, set the network settings to "automatic" and it should pick up the DHCP server and get assigned IP addresses, and it should work.

ICS on Neotel Through a Router

I am an ex ADSL user that switched over to Neotel and am using my old Mweb Billion 7401VGP Router, this is how I setup ICS at home.

1. Host IP 192.168.0.1 (PC That has the dialup connection XP or Vista)
2. Workstations IP 192.168.0.2 , IP 192.168.0.3 etc..
3. Router IP change from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.0.254 (change in Router Settings Homepage)
4. Enable ICS on the Host Machine, run the wizard, run the network wizard for the rest of your computers on your LAN to use another Gateway.

5. Host Network Connection Settings TCP/IP Properties:
5.1 IP: 192.168.0.1
5.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
5.3 Default Gateway: Blank
5.4 Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222
5.5 Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.220

6. Workstation/s Network Connection Settings TCP/IP Properties:
6.1 IP: 192.168.0.2
6.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
6.3 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
6.4 Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222
6.5 Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.220

Repeat the above Workstation steps for other computers on your LAN that you wish to share ICS but obviously change the IP 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.3 etc..

I have 3 Computers/Workstations currently using ICS through my router and there is no hassle. I did however have to use OpenDNS as the Primary and Alternate DNS's in order to browse www.opendns.com/

was only keeping telskum cause i could connect 2 pc's through the router with no hassles.
You guys have now saved me R800 / month extra, Neotel Prime uncapped here i come.

It is so liberating not to have Telkom in my life anymore. The greatest pleasure I had was coming home after canceling my account (30 minutes !!!). When I checked my line was dead I happily proceeded to rip the Telkom wires out of the wall.

EDIT: The big Irony about canceling was the Telkom staff actually asked me about Neotels coverage and experience ... LOL ... she was also interested in how to apply. Take that one Telscum.

When I cancelled my Telkom line it took them 2 weeks to get it right
