Vodacom part of MTN and Neotel plan?

When news like this surface I get worried that once again competition will take a beating. Whenever companies get together to take on a new venture, prices stay the same and the man on the street you and me end up with a consortium manipulating prices. (Bread and Milk price fixing comes to mind)

It seems in South Africa we will always be stuck with higher prices for internet and other forms of communication

I could be wrong but experience tells me otherwise .
 
Neotel and mtn are working together to the fibre network up. To me that's a good thing. With vodacom not part of the deal they'll be undercut by mtn in pricing and that's good for me.
 
I guess if your not in the industry you will not see the real benefit to a network partnership here. It makes sense for 3 networks to get involved and would be great if CellC joined in (they anyway rely on VC).

This will allow more hosting facilities outside Jhb. It will help with redundancy and improve capacity. Its not a cost saving to customers, but a quality of service improvement and new rollouts to areas not yet serviced.

So do not expect a cheaper bill at the end of the month.

EDIT: As an after thought this kind of news should rather fall under "WASPS and Network Backend" with a warning "Consumers do not get excited" disclaimer.
 
It makes sense for Voda to go with NeeTel and MTN - simply to escape Telkom's stranglehond on bandwidth pricing and leased line pricing (and anything that's Telkom-related) and go somewhere else where it's cheaper.

But the consumer will not get the benefit of this should all three decide not to pass their savings on to the customer, and decide to milk the customer as usual. :sick: Then that will be blatant profiteering.

The cellular companies are [-]much[/-] like the banks and fix prices - ask the resident cellular representatives here on the forum. They will deny it, obviously, however it is something that happens. Cell C is not involved but MTN and Vodacom might as well be one company considering they have ALWAYS been in bed together. On the other hand ICASA has prevented Cell C from releasing a product that was a lot cheaper than what at the time were the current prices(+/- 2 years ago). ICASA stated to Cell C that it was too low and it would undermine the current price fixes of the greater mobile companies. (ie the public would ask to many questions)

It is a sad state of affairs, where the telecoms companies are in the grip of greed. If a cellular representative wants to undermine what I have said, before you do, why not share the cost to company of a single SMS? Greedy pigs!

Naive. When you start to think Telkom is the only problem you have failed to realise it is deeper and more entrenched than that.

Vodacom, MTN and Cell C are all just as greedy, self centred and care as much about the consumer as Telkom has.

They are all greedy pigs, and all one needs as proof is their bottom line profit.
