To Neotel or not to Neotel..

Right so i have just come back from 6 years in the UK, and i am looking for a decent ISP. Unfortunately where i live there is no copper, affirmative shopping has removed it all.
So im stuck with a WIFI solution i guess, and I had hoped that Neotel would be the one, but after reading this forum im not so sure.
Basically i want internet to run my laptop, desktop, mediacentre, PS3, and Xbox360.

I read that neotel was better than iburst... but now i see there are plenty negative posts about both.

Is there anyone on this forum running Apple and using neotel, just curious, cause i see they talk a lot about drivers for PC, but Apple isnt mentioned, and well thats kinda important.

They have drivers for Mac ........ as for their service, if you can get someone else, do it and bypass Neotel.
 
The long answer is: no.
The short answer is:

The problem with Neotel is as follows:
- everything works fine initially
- membership grows
- the tower that you are connecting to becomes overloaded
- all the customers connecting to that tower suddenly experience bad network conditions
- it takes Neotel a long time to change infrastructure to handle the new load

This means that their service is ultimately unreliable, as a direct result of their own success.

If there was control at the tower level to prevent the addition of new users on an already maxed out tower, then I would not be posting this.
 
I would rather look at Telkom 3G or WiMax

Mac and Neoflex work fine together since its wireless - no drivers needed - and this is what youll want if you want to run your xbox, ps3 and laptop. Network performance however is a seperate issue - id really recommend you wait a month or two to see if things improve as they supposedly are (according to neotel). You could also try a wimax solution from telkom or screamer or openweb or axess. They are more expensive than neotel but at least they work.

Id recommend that if you want to sign up with neotel and your coverage is excellent, i think you should make them agree in writing beforehand that they wont change your signal coverage, and that if they do they will immediately cancel your contract without any penalty to you or restore your signal to its previous state.
 
ouch, uncapped 3G is gonna kill you then ...... so if you don't get Telkom, don't expect uncapped anything bru :(

Sorry, but you will struggle to do that in a month here given our slow network on any ISP. I lived in the U.S for 4 years with a 6mb/s uncapped cable line - trust me i feel your pain.
 
yea i wasnt expecting to do that kind of traffic here, im just after a true uncapped, unshaped service, so i can do RDC, play online and the odd download :p and not max out my cap in a day...

Online gaming with any wireless solution is generally not adviseable. Maybe WOW but FPS's your ping will be nuts. YOu'll only se the guy who shot you as he teabags you :(. With users logging on and off all the time pings will most probably bounce all over the show. Nothing bad against Neotel, it's just how Multiple access networks work...
 
a guy from neotel came to the work today and showed me the phone that is wireless and you can sms and what not and he said i can save some money if i take the neotel package (i am with telkom now), and i like it cause my wife can take the phone to work with her and can maybe use it with her laptop but i suspect i might end up with problems.

is this true?????

Trust me, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT sign up with Neotel, DO NOT!!

You're putting yourself in for hellava ride of bull and crap if you join with them. Wait it out a few months until they improve. I'm sure everyone will agree with me.
 
ha ha ha ok sorry but i had to ask, the thing is that product will work for us but like you say i will have problems and even though telkom are expensive they are reliable.

dont do it , they sort things out eventually after 10 calls+ and dont even call clients back but on the good side they gave me a free antenna after taking away my excellent coverage
