Shared ADSL Router - how to control speed per LAN point is it possible?

In short, I share a ADSL router with someone else. However, I own it and we both use "dial-up" accounts (PPPoe) connections to access the net.

Thus, if the other person has been downloading lots of things or leaves lots of stuff in a download queue, my experience is always a slow surfing speed.

Is it not possible for me to configure the router or something to say if LAN connected on port say 4, that the maximum speed for that port is say 64kbps, we sharing a 384 standard telkom line, and I am doing this person a favour.

Please advise or have any ideas.
 
As far as I know, the ports are hard wired into the router, and there is no settings on them. Ask him/her nicely to *!(@#$off while you do your dl'ing :D
 
Force the other person to use a downloader (software) that sets a maximum download speed of 192.
That will leave enough "room" on the line for you to use it.
 
You need some hardware between you and the ADSL router.

Typically a MikroTik RB750 would be perfect. You can set up queues on that with different download and upload speeds, per type (ie ftp, http, p2p, etc) and per time of day. So you could limit the other person to 128K in the day and full speed at night - or however you want to set the speeds.
 
What you could use, I am personally using this to control traffic on my home line is a little app called "cFospeed" http://www.cfos.de/download/download.htm. Install it on the PCs that you wish to monitor. What it does is slow down or speed up the transfer speed based on pings to your Exchange, works very well.
 
Yeah, QoS would be the easiest. Most new routers have it built in.
This allows you to limit the speeds of each Ethernet port, sometimes even depending on what time or day it is.
