The idea of a Mesh as in JHB sounds good any takers for a mesh in P.E? . Got a 4km link running already. Using SMC AP want to switch to Senoa cause the output on SMC is low.

Hi

Why don't you register on this site to try to see who is close and available to start a mesh..

I know it is easy to use and much better than the guessing game or Flashlight on the roof.......

NodeDB
Enjoy

Mossie

Thanks Mossie I'll do that. I'm glad I found this forum. In PE I struggled my backside off just to find someone who stocked the bits and pieces. Got ripped off here and there, but thats sometimes the price of the learning curve :)

Hi there,
I'm in Ben Kamma and the link goes to Kabega (close to Checkers Metlife and the Makro). Where r u?

Too far from me - if I stood on my roof with a flashlight the fishing boats would think I'm a lighthouse.

Hi there,
Where r u roughly? I know of links from Kamma Heights to St francis 50kms! Try the site that mossie suggested nodedb (check the posts). I have filled in my details. The map feature is lousy so I checked my details on another mapping site (There are plenty).

think about it

I tested the senao, very nice and stable unit. pro's: range and stable, cons: price, limited (what you see is what you get).

the linksys, pro's: price, custom software (can still run the opensource software from web gui), cons: none found yet.

the senoa is very expensive, good but expensive. why not have a look at the http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/dp/products/details.asp?StockID=60095 and they can ship the linksys wrt54g to you. with the right software running on this unit you can do almost anything with it. or visit www.dbg.co.za and organize or phone them in cape town and pm me and we can arrange to get it sent to you via speedpost.

I use Aerosat in Port Elizabeth and they are quite reliable, but I have been having some problems with international gaming.

I have heard about them, but do they cover Jefferys Bay. Knowing my luck they only cover PE.

If I didn't have bad luck, I would have no luck at all.

There is something in Jbay - I've picked up a few senao AP's in J-Bay. Dunno if its Aerosat or if its leftovers from the jbay <=> humansdorp munincupality link that was installed a few years ago.

Hey guys,

First thanks mufasa for the advice. I need to read the forums i little more often, maybe I would have read your piece before buying the Senoa units :o anyway got them installed. Didnt really make a difference to the speed. Pretty much the same as the SMC set to 11b. Getting about 5mbit/sec. used the SMC units to set up a link to my folks in Beverly Grove. Turns out they are only about 400m away direct but by car its a three km round trip to get onto Kragga Kamma road and go up to BG. Even though I dont have line of sight I got lucky and have got a good connection varying between 3mbit/sec and 8mbit/sec. 1.4 Gig file took just +/- 90 mins to transfer. We share a 512k ADSL connection without trouble, everyone gets their email and internet access is good. Been playing BF2 my boet in Kabega plays as well and my other boet got on. All three playing BF2 no hitches! Seems to work well. QUESTION: I wouldnt mind having other guys on the connection BUT we also use the connection for work related purposes. Files get shared that contain private info. If for example I dont mind sharing an internet connection but want to share info with only certain people on the network how could I go about it. I cannot password protect the folder cause the software involved needs full access ie once in the software there is no oppurtunity to enter a password when trying to access the info on another machine at a remote site. I'm thinking that other users of the network might be able to access the internet without accessing my data by simply being on another subnet address. I not sure if it can be done. Any answers?

the private data should be running over a vpn link, that way you could have a secure point-to-point link running through the wifi link.

hmm.... im also interested in a PE WUG. i've added myself 2 NodeDB
Maybe we can make something happen.

Hey guys,

I think a PE WUG would be kinda cool :D
Anyone know where in PE to get the equipment, come to that what exactly do you need ? :o
Just a regular wireless router with an extended antenna?

Thanks
