Easynews - how?

OK, so I signed up for an Easynews account, but what now? Got NO idea how it works, any tips? Do I need to download a client? How do I search for what I'm looking for? (Last OC episodes to be exact).

When your results come up look for either the complete file or for the parts needed to assemble the complete file. Your best bet is to look for a [parViewer] link which will open up a new window. If none of the parts are listed as missing click on "check all (no par)". If there were parts listed as missing hit the check all button instead. Give it a name in the "name" field and hit zip.

Now you're in the Zip Manager - use a download manager - they recommend Reget. Copy the "download" link over to it. Add in your username and password.

You'll need winrar (or similar) to re assemble all the bits into one file.

I try to avoid downloading the compete file incase of problems - eg power cuts. That way I only need to download the corrupted smaller rar files.

If you dont want to use http downloads and want to use a standalone news reader application then you can do that also.

You can do a global search at:
http://members.easynews.com/global4/search.html

The way I work it is like so:
- Log in at http://www.easynews.com/login/
- Go to main members page
- Search for the groups you like, check them and add to favourites
- Click on link to favourites
- Pick a fave, and look through the posts ( already assembled from parts )
- Posts split by day - 0,1,2,3... etc links at top & bottom
- Check some posts you want to d/l
- You have 10 zip files you can create - for now just click the zip button
- Click on Go to Zip Manager ( top & bottom of screen )
- You can now ( amongst others ) download the zip with your stuff
- I use Reget - just drag and drop zip download link onto reget arrow-window thingy
- Tell Reget authorisation required and enter your Easynews login/pass ( make this permanent in Reget via Site Manager )
- Download with Reget ( multi-segmented d/l )
- Go buy bigger disk drive, coz this setup can LEECH!!!
- When you get the hang of it you can select which zip to add the stuff to on the posts pages

You can of course use NNTP with a news client. Others use .nzb files exclusively with a proggy like Newsbin Pro. All a matter of taste and habit I suppose. Free .nzb search at:

Will someone please explain to my, why, why why why the hell would you signup with easynews? The only reason i can think of is that you have a SAIX account(crap news server which is totally useless) but its not like you have a MASSIVE cap or are you uncapped? Dont people know that IS has such an awesome news server which is actually FREE if you have an IS account?
 
Well, I decided that my Sentech 256 might as well start working for me. I download about 3gb per month. That's 17gb wasted. So yes, I DON'T have access to IS News server, and I DO have a largish cap.

A little tricky, but I'm managing. Still looking for S03E23, but found E24 and E25 of OC...

Also checking out UseNext. Seems nice. Can't find what I'm looking for, but interface is nice. :p

I'm uncapped - can I keep my easynews account?

Put in your easynews username and password. Its the same one you use to log in to members.easynews.com.

I signed up when I was still on Uunet, but I find it such a convenient way of doing things that I stay with it even since I moved to uncapped IS. For me, the HTTP interface to the pre-assembled parts works very well. The fact that I can load up a gig in a zip and use a download manager like Reget means that the stuff really pumps down with 6 or 8 connections grabbing a single file, and retrying if the connection drops when I'm not around. I know Newsbin will also open multiple channels, but the fact that the files are pre-decoded ( e.g. out of yenc ) on Easynews means less data to transfer. The web interface is much quicker than downloading zillions of headers.

IS news server has not been that great in my experience. It seems virtually useless during the day, and even at other times keeps giving you that blasted service discontinued error. Easynews stays up!

This is the only monthly expense that I pay gladly. I started using them when there was no reliable news server in South Africa and although IS seems to have a proper service now, there still seems to be some problems using them as quite a few threads would show. I am also in a position where I do not want my international capped, because of local downloads. The cost and unnecessary trouble caused in maintaining two accounts is not worth it. I have never had one problem with Easynews and my downloads all arrive at 105 kilobytes per second, all for the cost of less tha 10$ per month!

I have used news servers previously and find that the Easynews way of doing things is far superior. No unnecessary downloads of headers to find what you want and the ability to zip a total download into a file is excellent. Also, with their global search facility and thumbnails etc, I get exactly what I want within minutes. I normally download something at the spur of the moment when I am made aware of it, and do not normally search the binaries to find things to download.

Just kidding ... how much is easynews and which package did you take and what is the speed to good old S.A like ???.

$9-99 for 20GB or 1 month access depending which ends first. I let my payments go through automatically. I have about 120GB in my bank at the moment.

Speeds are decent, I flatline my 1024k line at 105 - 117k right through the entire download.
 
Tibby, hehe. I'll need requests - dunno what I'm doing with the rest of the bandwidth - the OC episodes I looked for is only 1GB. Got that now.

My Sentech256 tops out at 28 KBps multi-threaded, the same I get with any other HTTP download. So basically "full speed" of the connection. Quite impressed.

Luke, I think I've actually tried, but couldn't get on their server? I'm a NOOB when it comes to these news servers, so might have done something wrong. Can you give me a few tips? What's the address, and do I need a client? Thanks

I think news.is.co.za, am using outlook express (which I wont put under the "client" category :) )
 
How do u download from the IS news server using Newsbin

Easynews has a decent retention so you should be able to find something :) Shame all the good tv series stuff is off the air until September.
