ADSL Price Reduction from Telkom

Telkom filed an overall price decrease of 2.1% with ICASA this morning

Main beneficiaries of Telkom"s proposed price changes will be ADSL users who
will enjoy a reduction in rentals of up to 32%. There are also reductions of up
to 20% in the monthly rental for residential ISDN services, a decrease of up to
39% in the rates for IPLC"s (International Private Leased Circuits) as well as
significant cuts in long distance and international call charges.
Despite inflationary pressures, local call charges remain unchanged.
The price of long distance calls have been reduced by 10%.

The proposed DSL 192 and 384 monthly rental is R245 from 1st August 2006 - a
price decrease of R25 (9.3%) on the former and R114 (31.8%) on the latter.
"We are combining our DSL 192 and DSL 384 services, and DSL 192 customers will
automatically be upgraded in due course to an up-to 384kbit/s service, depending
on network infrastructure. In future, business customers will also be able to
subscribe to the DSL 384 service," explained Hayward.
There are also reductions of 24.1% on the monthly rentals for DSL 512 and DSL
1024. The proposed new monthly rental for DSL 512 is R362 (down from the current
R477 monthly rental) while DSL 1024 monthly rentals are set to drop by R164 to
R516.

You mean this Thread> 40% drop in ADSL prices?

My initial thoughts as well. :)

I take it these decreases for ADSL Line Rental, fall outside the scope of the actual cost of bandwidth or per Gb billing since November last year.
When are these prices going to fall?:rolleyes:
When can we see options for 30GB accounts @ R200? HUh?
Even with the drop in line rental customers needing more bandwidth are still paying more overall.

yea - its cheaper, but not better. and we still stuck with the pathetic CAP. GET RID OF THE GAWD DAMN CAP TELKOM!!!!
 
YES!!! im so getting 512kbps :) *goes + gets drunk with the telkom techies from the 40% decrease thread*
 
Still not good enough for me to want to get it. Still looking at R600 rand for a 512K (ancient by international standards) service and a 3GB download package.

Telkom can keep it.

And the 1024k service is flagship!!!!!
 
Thanks T. When shall we expect the next cut? We still have a LLLLOOOOONG way to beat 1000% over price. So what is the plan, when are we going to get there?
 
Too little - too late!

For those that need it most there is very little to be glad about in telkoms proposals. The cheapest broadband offering as only decreased by 5%.

Current cost:
- Line rental R87.05
- 192 ADSL R270.00
- Total R357.05

Proposed cost:
- Line rental R94.69
- 192 ADSL R245.00 (to be upgraded to 384)
- Total R339.69

Very disappointing! (And this excludes ISP costs)

What this really means is that the cost for entry level ADSL comes down by a whole R25.

What it also means is that everyone (I'd guess the majority of users) who were on 192 ADSL now get twice the speed, which in turn means that they'll burn through their 1-3 Gig caps at twice the rate, which therefore means that Telkom stands to make more money by selling more data.

For the ADSL-less masses, these cuts are meaningless. For the majority on the low level packages, this will probably end up costing them more...

Telkom are playing smoke and mirrors here folks. They can say that they have reduced ADSL prices, but in reality, they have done it in a way that only benefits those who are already on the service (no adding to the already over long ADSL waiting lists).

This will do nothing to increase broadband penetration in South Africa.

current total = R680
proposed = R516

leaving R164 less? thats a lot boet. say what you want but R164 in my books is quite a lot.
 
ADSL line rental is nothing more than price gouging dressed up in sheeps clothing. It's blatant double billing (we pay R80/mo for the friggin' copper wire already) and should be scrapped.
