Vonage Voip UK Review

Hey Guys,

Just signed up with Vonage VOIP in the UK... simply just to try the tech out. So far things have been good. Apart from the initial outlay of cash for the adapter... here are the prices.

So a total of £39.96 for the router & first months rental. £5.99pm gets you unlimited calls to any UK landline. The alternative on a local telco company in the UK would add up to about £25pm.

Ordered on Monday the 12th and its here on the 14th.. the virtual number was also active minutes after signing up.

Sooo I shall see how things go. Stupid thing is its cheaper to call SA from here at 2p per minute than call your neighbour on your telkom line.

True, usually cost me between 2p and 4p to call back home, still not bad, but seriously looking into the voip options, let me know how your experience goes

Brilliant, is all that i can say.

I have an NTL 1mb unlimited cable connection. That plugs directly into the Linksys Router which manages NAT & QOS (quality of service is extremely important with VOIP) The Router plugs into my wireless AP.

So, sitting downloading stuff on bit torrent at 120kb per second and having a phone call at the same time.. so far i cannot tell the difference.

SIP VOIP is definitely going to take over... now all we need is a way to bypass telkom on the last mile.

I'm just wondering, would it still work if you took one of those phones and plugged it into an ADSL line here in SA, or any other place in the world for that matter?

Vonage is getting sued by Verizon for VOIP patent infringement ... nice timing by Verizon considering the recent IPO and tanking stock price.

The big telecoms players are not about to roll over and die and let these VOIP upstarts take over their bussiness.

Perhaps the Skype fellows was much smarter than most by selling out themselves to eBay for a few billion and jsut moving on to the next big thing.

I know its still cheaper to use dial-through numbers for international calling.... which i can still do though its a bit weird... vonage voip >> BT PSTN >> dial-through provider voip >> telkom PSTN.

Yes NGAGE... most voip pap2 adapters have PPPOE capabilities... meaning they can authenticate like a computer directly with your ADSL modem. Unfortunately Vonage doesnt provide SIP account details so i cant use my PC :|

I think its going to be really interesting, if someone where to develope an embedded linux based appliance based on asterisk with the p2p capabilities of skype.. who knows... im returning, it might be me

I think the telecommuntions market will have to make consessions, the actual money is going to be made in the actual connections.... with Quad-Play Networks. Its almost impossibe to control voip implimentation.

The founders of Skype opted for an incentive package, rather than cash, and have remained in control of Skype. These guys are pretty hard core, and truly believe in their product. I don't see them buying the yacht and sipping cocktails just yet. Skype have a lot of competition now, but remain the largest threat to the established Telcos. They have always maintained that telecommunications will become free! I am sure you will see some more strategic moves from Skype in the near future.

Well Ebay has held the rights to Skype since 2005, but just recently decided to sell it. They went the cash route, and tried to make up for lost revenue. Ebay still retains 35 percent stake, and has sold the rest to an investment group led by the private equity firm Silver Lake including Index Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board
