Broadband over Power Lines here soon and much cheaper than ADSL

As per my comment on the other thread. Where are they going to get their bandwidth from when Telkom is the only provider supplying international access? Surely they don't expect us to go through some Satelite array setup. And if they do have international access via the SAT3 cable (and assuming the SNO is as lazy as previously claimed) then they probably have some "special deal" with Telkom until Telkom cuts off their nads and go back on the deal ala AYCE.

rpm, I think an interview with GTS would better serve the communities questions rather than some marketing bladeebla.

However, other than my speculation... for the local arena (in terms of local connectivity and telephony) hoora (?)

Remember, we've seen Sentech and iBurst come into play with huge promises of being the "saviour" and has yet to prove anything of the sorts...

I hope the latency is as good as ADSL for my gaming, and my Telkom contract :o expires on Feb 2007, so I'll definately get it then...
 
I found info about the modem, but does anybody knows what it will cost?

User Modem (CPE)

The Customer Premises Equipment is the enduser modem. It is designed for quick and easyinstallation by home users. For broadband services (TCP/IP), the CPE connects to a PC / printer / server / router via its Ethernet or USBinterfaces. For voice services (H323 or SIP), it features a standard RJ11 connector, for a regular analogue telephone. The price in the article is an all-inclusive price. I dont know if GTS will have a month-to-month rate.

AcidRaZor: Will see what we can organize with them.
 
Any idea if we can see where their coverage extends to?

They did not want to give out too much info about that at this stage... I think they are concerned about being flooded with requests from regions where they have no clear rollout plans...
 
they sound like they're the SNO. good to see how they perform when they officially roll out.
 
My Question is : is it true BPL or fibreoptics laid ontop of Power Lines ? SO long they give better value than telkom it really does not matter, but I am interested...

Bacause it would give you the same feeling as you would get seeing the school bully, in a wheelchair with 2 broken arms, broken legs and a sign around his neck saying "Kick me" ... maybe thats just me :D
 
I still don't understand why this country is investing in all these obscure technologies to provide internet access. Wireless, power lines, cell technology, why dosent goverment simply provide a mandate to Telkom to i) lower prices on the SAT3 cable and ii) unbundle the local loop.

Result: instant cheap internet access for all
 
rsachoc, that would mean that they actually care, plus it would be too easy to do. But the biggest reason is that they would lose money (via shares). So it's much easier to get as much out of us, while they can, before being forced to do something because of international presure.

But in any case, when there's imcompetence with the ppl running the country, any type of competition is welcome. The other I day I saw the person that Ivy appointed to run the committee for local loop unbundling (prof marwala)...actually wanted to ask him wtf was going on. Didnt have a chance to though.

This is very good news although I'll have to wait until it comes to CT.

A question to GTS: Why will it take until November to have speeds over 1Mbps? Surely there's no new technology that will be out between August and December to enable you to do it?

And how are you providing the cheaper telephone call rates?

Hmm, seems they are following the sarfafrican trend, start the speed as low as possible, call it "broadband" and see what the people have to say.
Don't get me wrong, I applaud them for their effort and trying to introduce competition, and with thos prices they are gonna be doing a great job.

But why 512k? This country is lagging so far behind that we are already starting to see our own backsides :p
If the theoretical is 6mb/s (hard to believe) then why not start at something like 1.5 or 2mb/s? Then you will see an influx of new customers ;)
