No more anonymity for cellphone owners

Ugh. This law will be completely useless in actually preventing crime.

IMO the only thing that will happen is that cell phone hijackings & violent thefts thereof will increase as criminals seek to find a throw-away phone to use for a few minutes before they dump the thing...
 
agreed this is totally a waste of time and money. much like icasa.

is there room for conspiracy theories here, the government could now listen in to conversation that would give them insider trading information. all they have to do is pick a person in the know and get his/her number.
 
Don't agree, since anonymity is one of the drawcards for cellphone theft and resale.

Yeah and it's also a great way to harrass people who's cellphones get stolen.

Do people honestly think that just reporting the theft is going to be a smooth ride?
With police in some areas "loosing" up to sixty percent of child rape cases I'd hate to see what happens to petty theft dockets.

By the time you manage to report the theft the criminal has already used it to commit another crime. You'll have the police on your case. I hope you like interrogations.

On the bright side it may make people more careful about where they leave their cellphones as well as cut down on people who conveniently loose their phones in order to get a better/newer one.
 
What is stopping criminals getting pre-paid phones from Mozambique/Botswana/Zim etc... Pre-Paid roaming works too...

Thats true hey, but legally they have to register their details first before comitting crime in this country.o and lets not forget all foreigners coming into the country (/me points to 2010) do they have to register first? does this apply to international roaming? would be nice to know this....

When have you heard of contract subscribers being harassed when their mobile gets stolen?
