Vista - HOWTO

Hey Guys,

Just a quick place holder for getting your card to work under Vista...First Rule of thumb....DON'T INSTALL WINDOWS UPDATES :) It breaks the huawei cards (and only the huawei card....so far)

Will update thread ASAP.

HUAWEI E620:

Download the software from http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=305 (normal install). Extract and install the software by running setup.exe. Once installed, insert the card and Vista will prompt you for some drivers. Select the option to install from another location, and point the installer to "C:\Program Files\Huawei\drivers\WinXP"

You will need to do this three times, once for the card and twice for the modems :)

Once that is done, create a new dialup connection and dial to *99# and all should be well.

Another way is to install just the INF files. Extract the huawei software and locate the INF files. Check under Device Manager for the Unknown devices and "Update the drivers" to the hauwei INF's

HUAWEI E620 and x86 VISTA v6.0 Build 6000

After a few hours struggle I managed to get my Vodafone card to work. Since I have seen many posting regarding the issue I decide to share my experience.

My journey started by finding the correct drivers. The drivers on the red compact disk from Vodacom provide to install but did not work as expected.
There is no error.

I downloaded the drivers from : http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=305, HUAWEI web site. The correct file is, • CD2HOSTJ01B113D01SP01C03(Normal without voice call) (70005 KB) 30-Jun-2006

Unzip the file to a source directory, e.g. c:\temp\huawei
In VISTA, click on the windows flag, and right click the property of the Computer object on the menu. Click on Device Manager on the right. Open the device manager, go to ‘Other Devices’. You will notice an unknown driver. Data Interface Card. Right click on the object, Right Click and select Update Driver Software ..., and DO NOT select (on the next dialog) ‘Search automatically for updated driver software’ but the bottom one, ’Browse my Computer ...’.

Click on Browse and select, e.g. c:\temp\huawei\driver
This option will install two drivers, namely:
Under Modem: ‘HUAWEI Mobile Connect – 3G Modem’
Under Ports: HUAWEI Mobile Connect – 3G Application Interface (COM?)
Now, in Device Manager go to the top (your PC name will be here) and select Scan for Hardware Changes, another device under Ports will appear, namely: ‘HUAWEI Mobile Connect – 3G PC UI Interface (COM?)’

Now that you have THREE new devices installed, install the Huawei software.

If User Account Control is enabled then the software will install but the ‘Connect’ option will fail. The software will be unable to create an Dial-Up entry (RasMAN)

Click on the Flag button (Start), Select ‘Connect To’, click on ‘Set up a connection or network’, Click on option one, ‘Connect to the Internet’, Select Next, click on Setup connection anyway, then next, select your modem, set the number to *99#, no other details are required.
Manually connect your Modem connection, after you have executed the Hauwei software and entered you pin.

Please post where I have omitted detail.

My connection work 100% on VISTA release software.

Why so complex a procedure for the E620? Just run the Setup.exe (as Tazz_Tux recommends) which installs driver & connect/config util. I know it looks a bit ugly, but it works very well.

You can still use the Vista adapter connect/disconnect functionality (i.e Connect To) if you wish. Also without the Huawei util how do you set a different APN (e.g. internetvpn)?

Why do you need to create a new dialup connection? The installer creates one automatically (E620.data.con).
 
Card not being detected

Cool Cool, this should all work IF the card is detected in Vista, my Vista doesn't even detect the card :( Using build 6000 , it has some hardware conflicts but i resolved them, and it reads the pci to pcmcia adapter fine, just it does not pick up the E620 HSDPA card AT ALL. Can anyone help me?

Have you tried another card (none 3G/hsdpa/etc) in the converter ?

Is this on a PC or a laptop?

Installed Vista RTM on a fresh disk, all nice and clean. Use IE7 to open a Microsoft Webmail Outlook site and...it crashes IE7.

I've had this exact symptom from RC1 onwards and everytime I'm told the next release fixes it.

So using a MS OS to run a MS browser to access a MS service, crashes!

All other apps seem to run fine.

So much for testing your own product...:(

I do not have another card, so I can't try another card, and I know no one else who has a card.

It is on a PC.

By the way, the card works perfect in XP, just in Vista it doesn't detect, I really want to get it working in vista. I tried reinstalling Vista, I tried windows update in Vista, nothing seemed to work . :( :(

This is a known problem and MS is releasing Exchange patches for this. In the meantime remove the MIME plugin if you have it installed and afterwards it should be fine.
 
NovaTel U740 works without any additional software / drivers... And yes, I have loaded all the Windows updates without issues.

Any issue I had is to specify the APN in the Modem Init String
