Telkom Media clarifies planned IPTV offering

The thing that upsets me is, this proves that local bandwidth can be infinately less expensive. A consumer can currently get 30Gig traffic for around R130. IPTV will suck up 30Gigs in no time at all yet it gets to be flat rated????!!!! We are getting screwed on local access and Telkom knows this!

And another thing, I would love to see anybody else negotiating an IPTV offering on the same terms as Telkom Media. The market is anything but open! :mad:

I dare a big corporate to negotiate flat rated IP access to homes! Let's see how far anybody but Telkom Media gets...

christ. control control control. it's like we are living in some form of a communist state. i bet you if anyone except telkom wanted to try and offer IPTV they'd have to go through a 'regular' ADSL line.

So if I start my own VOD service, people won't need to worry about their cap, right? If they are so separate from Telkom as they state, how do they manage that?
 
Ok so we need a telephone line + an adsl rental + an IPTV rental lol
And we still complain about the cost of DStv. Multichoice (even though they are ripoff artists themselves) are heroes when you compare them to the likes of Telkom.

Another thing to consider is that if they are putting in these wonderful 20mbps lines I highly doubt that they are going to be cheaper than the current offerings (4mbps etc) and as such IPtv is a pipe dream for Telkom. Who would pay over R1000 a month just to watch tv... Telkom are dreaming once again.

Then add "I can't watch tv because my adsl line is down".

Telkom doesn't realise that 4 weeks to infinity to install a tv solution is a bit long when u compare it to DStv where you can install a dish, decoder and get activated the same day.

And then as per a previous post if you're going to stream thousands of GB of data everyday to thousands of people for R320 per customer surely an ISP should be able to transport unlimited local bandwidth across the adsl network for less than R320 month.
 
You go to teklom, offer them 90% of your company, put up one billion or so rand for your portion, and then show a project plan that rakes in 2 or 3 billion a year using just 50% of the current ADSL subscriber base as your market.

Comon .. R400 a month for utilising local bandwith. The bandwidth that just sits there and does nothing. LMAO. Brilliant!
 
Chris van Zyl from Telkom Media made it clear that the R 320-00 paid for their IPTV service does not include the ADSL access portion as suggested by some commentators.

Wouldn't touch it even if they had all the best series and movies just because its from them

We must be sharing thoughts here. The first thing I thought when reading the article was that there is defnitely no issue for allowing uncapped at a lower price. If they can look the other way with the cap issue on IPTV why can't they do the same with other traffic. It proves that there is no reason why all IP traffic cant be uncapped, not just IPTV or more precisely Telkom's IPTV :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

We cap you if you want Internet access and charge you an arm and a leg while we're at it.

But when we want you to give us more money so you can, ahem 'enjoy' IPTV, we will gladly install ADSL2+ with 20Mbit/s but make DAMN SURE that you will NOT BE ABLE to use it to surf the web in any way or form other than to *cough* enjoy our IPTV offering! Oh, plus we'll try to make it cheaper than DSTV and essentially cheaper than internet broadband alltogether. Oh yeah! And it'll be completely uncapped - Ha! Ha!

But remember! YOU won't be able to surf the web and you'll have to pay...EXTRA.

This whole IPTV thing is a big fat slap in our consumer face. What are they going to show anyway where are the competition. Soon we will see Skype get blocked and Telkom only allowing their own clone of Skype to function.:eek:

Not what they are saying. They are saying you can have IPTV only if you already have an ADSL 2+ connection. It's a R320pm add-on. It's like buying an uncapped local bandwdith account from an ISP (if such a product existed)

If you don't have ADSL 2+, you can't have IPTV. So then you would have to fall back on their planned satellite TV service for R100pm.

But they are not going to provide a nobbled ADSL setup restricted to IPTV.

And clearly, they are not going to provide ammunition for "drastic reductions" in the cost of ADSL

Because its not the same thing. Same reason why your normal telephone calls* do not show up on your ADSL cap. Just because IPTV and Internet access both use IP does not mean they are related.

* Your voice calls are converted to digital data at your local exchange, they just use a totally different backbone network from the IP Internet one.

telkom is shooting themselves in themselves in the foot. How can this be fair? How can they let us get 20mbps uncapped IPTV and let us pay for capped internet over the same frikken adsl line?

Grrr. Telkom never ceases to anger me.

Well by Telkodemonopolies' own internal definition, there can only be one service provider, and all other service provider wannabeez are really just irritating fleas that Telkodemonopolies keeps around to make it appear as though Telkodemonopolies is being sucked dry by competition - when in reality Telkodemonopolies is actually a huge vampire bat on which the fleas live.

Translation: TelkodemonopoliesMedia can try to tell us that it is separate and autonomous etc etc etc, but in reality TM is the guano end of the vampire bat that is Telkodemonopolies - oops sorry that's where Stevie Hayward's office is.
 
Has ICASA preapproved Telkom media's licence? Cause it sure sounds like the deal with the licence is done (...Maybe under the table, but that another story for another time)
