I just saw SimCity 5 is already available on preorder here, and I was about to preorder myself a copy, when I went off to do some quick research. What I found was not was I was anticipating. Needless to say, I’ll rather wait till after the release before I will go out and buy it.

Bad news to hardcore Simcity fans: Maxis abandons SimCity 5
SimCity Societies, as it's being called, has been handed over to Caesar IV developer Tilted Mill Entertainment, who will be taking over development duties from Will Wright's Maxis.
Director of Development Chris Beatrice:
"...I do not want to mislead anyone: This SC is not a realistic urban simulation, which I understand, to many, represents the heart of what SC is," he said. "No one is blind to that. And if you're just completely turned off, even angered by the mere notion of any game called 'SimCity' that is not a detailed, realistic urban simulator, I absolutely understand that viewpoint, and absolutely respect it."

This sounds really bad to me. But some further reading reveals that maybe it is not that bad. There is still some
small shimmer of hope:
Director of Development Chris Beatrice
"So I must make it crystal clear that, like all SimCity games, this game is a city-building game. It is a city-building simulation. It is a city simulation. It is an urban simulation game. It is a game in which you build cities. Its focus is not on realism and detail (but that's not to say it lacks those things either).
"Again, I wish I could go to the next step and say more about the new and exciting possibilities this game brings to the series, and to gaming in general...and especially to respond to the various comments that have been made regarding other games like The Sims and City Life, but I cannot at this time."

Head over to this site for the latest on the new "Simcity 5" / Simcity Societies and some screen shots. Wikipedia also has some compressed news and a link to a petition here.

Hopefully we wont lose our Good [-]old[/-] Simcity
Only time will tell

So maybe you build this city, start mining resources and make war on other cities! Wait a @#%$& minute! That's an RTS game!

I wish every city manager/mayor and their subordinates can have a copy of this game, they might learn a thing or two about PLANNING

OMG - No!!! they're going to do something original. Blasphemy. All we wanted was better graphics, some new buildings and disasters and more stats to fiddle with... why... oh why???

I don’t know what they were thinking  I'm downloading it now so that I can see if they did destroy the SimCity name or not.

If it’s become some easy “fun” kids game, I won’t be buying it. I’ll have to go and sulk in a corner afterwards if that is indeed the case  :(

argh

I think I downloaded the wrong game.
This feels like some kids game - and it's boring.

I'm just going to wait for the Real SimCity 5 to be released by Maxis...

They have basically turned Sim City into Facebook.

I, on the other hand, can't wait for Cities Unlimited.
