10mb -> 20mb, upgrade procedure ?

The Telkom support staff are at the moment a little clueless about the 20Mb ADSL offering, but if you get through to a very helpful member of staff they will investigate for you while you're on the line and confirm whether it is or isn't available in your location. They're currently under the impression that 20Mb is only available on VDSL so you'll have to insist on them checking for you.

Thanks Crystal Web Rep, advice noted ;)

The only thing that annoys me, is that I'm perfectly fine with this stuff happening (as I mean, I am trying to beat the system), but they shouldn't transfer my line on a Friday evening and then be offline for the rest of the weekend so I'm stuck with no internet... It was working fine on an ADSL2+ 15Mbps sync, up until 2am this morning?

Oh well. I'll just have to sort it out :/

Z :)

I feel your pain, I had to wait 8 days for them to change me from 2 mbps to 10...utter confusion and incompetence until I spoke with a Tanya there who knew her stuff. If only we had direct lines to our favorite Telkom reps, efficiency would be up across the board for them.:D I guess at least I had a working stable connection. The least they could have done is given you that for the weekend.

@KinsZA That calculation is not accurate. I've used it before when my attenuation was different and it said I couldn't get more than 8 megs and now I am sitting with full 10 megs speed So my question is if i upgrade will they allow me to get 20megs adsl2+ as it is available?

It will always be subject to your line stats. While it may appear from a user's perspective that all is fine because you're not online and monitoring it 24 hours a day, as an ISP we have insight into this, and can see the disconnections/loss of sync on customers' accounts, and they're fairly frequent on poor lines (lines with poor line stats). While not a hard and fast rule, your SNR should remain above 10dB, preferably higher at all times. Unfortunately if your line stats indicate anything below this, you will in all likelihood be denied the 20Mb option by Telkom straight off the bat. While you can always insist on it, it's really not advisable. This becomes more and more important the faster your line speed is. Well, your reported stats will decrease with every speed bump, at least.

Hi Zertop and bavmorda

When speaking to Telkom, did you specifically ask for 20 mbps ADSL and they understood you without explanation or did you have to elaborate? Would like to order the same service as I am 300m away from my local MSAN, but would likely be more than happy with 20 mbps ADSL2+ for a little bit more a month.

When i spoke to them, I have explained that i want 20 ADSL2+ and that i don't want VDSL, seems that worked in a way. Spoke to Telkom with a very helpful guy, when they tried to renew/reset the port it gave them an error and he logged a call with technical guys. Apparently something is wrong on my port, which is funny because otherwise i have very stable line. Will see how it goes and once done will post here.

Current status:

1) DSL Not Working: Check
2) Mobile Data Bundle Finished: Check
3) Mifi Device not working: Check
4) 3G Dongle: Currently at another persons house.
5) Server: Up :) But no internet, so it can't download anything.
6) Family members limited 300MB phone bundle: Quickly running out :P

Living the life of millionaires right here :D

Support staff useless, check ?

Edit: DSL not working (due to something done by them), them saying the profile I was using didnt exist, one guy reading out his steps to do things out loud to himself while on the support line...

Just phoned Telkom. According to the person that helped me they don't offer 20mb ADSL+, only VDSL.

To the telkom guys you can call on 10210 anything greater than 10mbit only exists on VDSL. They dont seem to have any control over that range, the only thing that they managed to do was break my line which TelkomZA fixed for me this morning (he doesnt work on the weekend)

Seems I have a serious line issue. Can't sync at all on VDSL or ADSL. Oh well :D

Back Up :D

Apparently it was trying to sync at 15Mbps but for some reason it couldn't? So they've put me back down to 10 :(

Oh well

Good news on my site. Telkom manage to fix my port. Spoke to a really helpful guy. And they manage to fix my problem of only DL at 10. Quite happy now. Going to watch soccer now on HD channels to see how the streaming will work.
One question guys, when i do speedtest I'm getting around 16.5 any idea why so little. Router syncs at 20119. Any idea will be appreciated.

Some of them don't have a clue what they are talking about. My first call was a lady in Springs and she did not know a jack and i just cancelled the call and phone again and was lucky. Guy in Rosbank really knew his stuff and was helpful, even gave me his mail just in case if i need more help.

DSL has an overhead of extra information that goes with your data (You'd have to google for the specifics because its not something that can be even slightly summarized). This usually results in you getting about 80% of what you sync at, its all in how the protocol works. A 4mbit line syncing person gets about 3.4mbps total speed for example, I have managed to get 17.5mbps on my 20mbit line before.

Hope that answers your question

After 5 people who argued with me that 20mb ADSL2+ does not exist I relented and ordered a upgrade to VDSL.

The guys that you phone really know jack, the best bet would be to message TelkomZA stating your plan and ask his advice.

Myself as well as others here are rocking 20mbit on Adsl 2+

TelkomZA was the man who put me there, he rocks.

Hi KinsZa,

thanks for your reply. I'm aware of it, but before when on 10 often i was pushing 9.7-10.5 on speed test. Was thinking that now will get around 18.5. 16.5 is little bit of disappointment. But still is about 70% better then what it was, I'm happy and is just 100 bucks more. I think is worth it.

Wow thats high, I'd hit 7.5 when I was on 10, 17.5 on 20, guess there are other unknowns that play a part.

My attenuation is 41db, which means I'm about 3km away from my MSAN. However, another one has sprung up about 1.2km from my house. Can I expect them to move me over any time soon? In Constantia (an area where they said they will be increasing the footprint soon).

I can sync at 10Mb, but only just. Would be nice to get 20Mb on ADSL2+ now that it is available. It's funny how my area is surrounded by VDSL footprint because of the near exchange, yet they haven't connected us yet :/

I think the lines are routed to the far exchange because the area originally went through that one alone. Now that we have a more recent MSAN/ex-DSLAM perhaps they will change my route.

EDIT: the situation: Map.jpg

'tis cruel :(
