It's really not so simple as "fools lock themselves in". I would submit to you that a fool continues to use a Telkom line if Choice 2 were available to them.

I don't see how it's possible to be locked in to something that's free. Smart people will take the 4Mbps for now.

The only cost I can think that you will have that is close to ipc is you will have to pay for a network port on jinx but that was not expensive at all last I heard and you can get say a 10Gbps port which the entire parkhust can share

Scratch my previous comment teraco provides free peering. So the only cost will be a fiber cable running from Parkhust to Teraco, which I assume is included in you monthly rental charge.
 
An interesting read....I am really happy for the residents of Parkhurst...4Mbps lines free....now that is just so awesome!!

Teraco is the facility. It doesn't decide agreements between individuals. The document Vuma released makes no mention of free peering.

Correct - I'm assuming the ISPs will have to pay Vuma something to get access to the last mile. Which is fine. Teraco charge R1k once off R350/month for what's essentially a piece of fibre between two systems - so eg. Afrihost would co-locate a router/server there, then pay R350 to link to MTN backbone, R350 for VUMA backbone, then just do all the traffic management between the two. Obviously it's a little more complex that that, but you can see how nice it is having Teraco as an "IPC Point". The barrier to entry has become FAR lower than the Telkom IPC links.

Oh well, I am stuck with Telkom for now... I hope we get faster services from them soon!

Yes in the Document Vuma mentions a small peering charge with other providers much less then Telkom's IPC. So this means providers will be able to give much better pricing on a bandwidth level.

Why pay R1299 per month for 1Gbps when data is R2/GB. Even at 50Mbps you can easily chow through a lot of GBs. I'd probably go for something like the 50Gb line for R499 and then get 250GB for another R499 or something.

On 10mb-and-under adsl yes. But I'm pretty sure when you're streaming 4k movies etc on your 1Gbps connection it won't be so cheap at the end of the month...

Yup, we definitely need some uncapped or even soft-capped accounts, at these high speeds the OOB Shark has rabies and frikkin laser beams on its head. Don't want to encounter it at all. I'm happy to only watch in SD if I hit my cap, and then go and buy another X gigs manually to revert to fullspeed.
 
I'm inspired to form an association for my suburb and see if I can garner enough support to invite RFP's as well. 1Gbps fiber :drool:.

They do mention the possibility of uncapped accounts but for capped accounts it will range from ~R10/GB for low usage to R2/GB for high usage. I'll happily pay R100/month for decent usage. Don't need uncapped and in most instances unshaped capped has now become more favourable than shaped uncapped. It will also be application neutral so tv providers can stream their content as a separate service.
 
I'll be watching this closely - our neighbourhood also suffers from terrible adsl connectivity - no plans for VDSL here for a long time so I am suffering on my barely 3Mbps line. Strange thing is we have an office park literally 300m away all connected with fibre, maybe we can tag on there.
 
My line struggled to sync at 384kbs here in Parkhurst. So glad to be getting fibre!
