Can a wifi router act as a host for a 3g modem? (ie 3g internet without "host" pc)

Hi Myadsl!

First post on this great forum.

I am thinking of getting my parents connected with 8.ta’s 10gb promo for R199.

Got a question regarding setup of a wifi network at their home.

The current setup runs through a wifi adsl router which is always connected to internet. They use the net via a number of wifi devices – laptops and cellphones. So there is no "host" computer hosting the router.

I would like to replicate this scenario using 3g as primary internet source instead of adsl, which I would like to cancel.

I therefore am looking for a 3g enabled router that can remain connected to the internet indefinitely by itself (ie. not needing a host computer to dial the internet via the 3g modem). Essentially this would mean that no host computer would be needed to activate the 3g connection as it will be “always on”.

Do such routers/solutions exist?
Your help would be much appreciated!
 
I am currently considdering to get an Asus RT-N16 and upgrading the firmware to dd-wrt.

Has anyone done this yet? As far as I can see the ZTE mr668 is supported. Any comments?
 
Hi Guys, new to this site but it seems like a brilliant source of information. Thanks to everyone who provides help here.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I've just bought a Zyxel NBG4115 router and cannot configure my CellC modem (MF-668) to get the internet working. Does anyone know the settings to use for Pin, APN, Dial Number, Username and Password (any any other tricks)? I'm on a Macbook, but not sure of that makes a difference.

3G Modems that work with the TP-Link MR3420

Hi all,

I recently bought a MR3420 3G wireless router, but I couldn't get my ZTE K3565-Z modem to work with it, even after upgrading the router's firmware and installing the modem's .bin file. So I'd like to find out what modem would work exceptionally with the router from the guys that are already using the MR3420.

Your urgent assistance would be greatly appreciated ... :D

I can only vouch for the E1820 and E1750, because I've used both those modems with the MR3420.
 
There is a bin file for the E372 (ex-K4605), but then the router is not completely stable.

I also tried an E367, but also not stable.

I believe i showed up a little late to the party:D,i want to get a 3G router for my home,
I have a Vodafone k3765(flashed with Huawei E1762 firmware) and a standard MTN E367 modem,
I would like to use the E367 modem preferably but would use the vodafone modem if required.
I want to get the 8ta 10gig deal(already tested for signal with a prepaid sim,so thats a non issue).
Please advise on which router to get,aswel as which wireless adapter/s to use with it(JHB area).

Thanks guys for all your suggestions, but for some strange reason everything started working fine last night and my K3565-Z managed to connect. Even this morning everything was still working just fine. Thanks a lot for your responses!!!;) :D

TP-Link MR3420 or Dovado Tiny and if you dont mind external USB devices i would go for a "high powered USB wlan adapter" from any of the chinese web shops. This one is really good value for money.

Magnus, what is the wifi range of the Dovado Tiny like ?

After all the trouble with the MR3420, I bought an Asus RT-N13U, but that also does not support the E372 and E367.

Peculiar, because my Asus WL-330N3G supports more devices.

MR3420 works, but unstable. You will lose warranty, but if you open the router, you can add extra capacitors to the 5V power rails (close to USB socket). Who knows, maybe it is a problem with the router, as otherwise there is no reason why it works well with other modems, they are very similar from the data transfer point of view.

Good question, dont know about the range really. Recommended it cause of good reviews online.

The E367/E372 issue seems like a mystery. I've used my E372 with MR3420 for over a month now with the bin-file i created with TP-Links sniffer software and it is rock solid (and i have similar reports from at least 5 swedish users). And the E367u-2 is also working great with MR3420. Production issues with the router perhaps or different components in earlier/more recent routers?
