Even the mobile operators do not charge that much for their smses... I think absa really want to milk the poor consumers for all they can. These services should be free, otherwise they can keep it. if I get defrauded I'll just launch a complain with the bank & they will pay back through insurance. either way they'll loose more money.

Standard Bank charge R2.45 when you want to notify someone via email when you do a payment. Now that is a rip off.

I wonder how this will boil down in court - if, say, your credit card is cloned - and ABSA try and claim they do offer services to notify you of card usage, and you turn around and say they are the only bank which charge 48c per transaction.

I dont feel ripped off by ABSA's bank charges, simply because I don't bank with them. And if YOU do, I am dumbfounded as to why!
+1
Of all the big banks, I think ABSA is the worst with regards to fees. Why people dont move to another bank dumbfounds me.

I think besides being tied in because of bonds, and general laziness (I think all banks will move your debit orders over for you so really you just need to update your employer and maybe a few more places like sars/annuities etc) is because most people assume that all banks are terrible anyway so why bother switching.

^^ Won't help... look at what happens to international companies that come here - they all end up the same.

Sorry guys, you pick your bank.

Yeah, a few years ago a certain British bank by the name of Barkley's re-entered the SA market after a number of years of absence. They bought a 25% stake (could have been higher but the memory is fading quickly) in ABSA, guess how that turned out for the SA market.

FNB FTW.

Charging for notifications? One of the reasons ABSA would be my LAST choice for a bank. Instead of hiding behind "extra security features for clients" they should just admit they want to screw their customers over even more.

Mis print

Banking fraud is a big problem in South Africa, and all South African banks are constantly looking at ways to protect their users against fraudulent activities in their accounts.

That should have been:

Banking fraud is a big problem in South Africa, and all South African banks are constantly looking at ways to milk their customers with fraudulent debits in their accounts.

:(

Not happy with AB-SIS bank either.
I always have to bend over with their banking charges.
Those notify me charges are probably funding Noot vir Noot on SABC2.

If you are trying to make fun of something, at least get the spelling right, otherwise you are the one left with egg on your face. :p

PS - How come you watch that show so regularly that you can quote it?

ABSA are just common thieves.

The "Full Management Fee" only covers your current account - you'll still pay for notifications on your credit card (which is where most transactions will take place).

Ya, same boat here. 25 transaction limit (on Silver) for the debt card on the current account. I think you pay like R10 per transaction thereafter. So you have to use the credit card more than you need to to avoid breaking the stupid limit, but then get robbed by stupid sms fee .

Will move to FNB or Capitec sometime.

Was with FNB year ago whey were BOB. Had a savings account and got robbed on charges. So they were like ABSA once apon a time. Lets hope they don't change back.

I bank with ABSA and I pay a once a month fee which covers all transactions - apart from money from another banks ATM - and I am very very happy with the service I get from them.
I am from the UK and lived all over Europe and know what a proper bank should do. IMHO no bank in SA comes close to a "proper" bank by virtue they charge for everything.
But all in all - happy with my lot with ABSA.

I know what you mean.
Have an account with Lloyds TSB, they looked confused when I wanted to open a savings account, as they dont exist on there own.
Their entry level account was a Current Account which is Free, including Internet banking and most daily transaction were free.
They never got a cent from me in charges, ever.

You should applaud me for remembering that line from an episode i once watched when i had the flu on a Friday night at home.
My Afrikaans sucks so i apologise for that you grammar nazi!:D

On topic, i did a little research for myself when comparing my normal charges to FNB and this thread has really opened my eyes to an alternative.

Bye bye ABSA and thanks for the tips from the fellow forumites who got me to sit up and take notice.;)

They need to recoup the R 50 million + annually they have just dedicated to sponsoring the Springbok Rugby sides for the next 5 years:whistle:......

SMS's should be free - save bank on fraud

FNB was the first to introduce SMS notifications.
FNB introduced free SMS notification in order to save money.
They activated inContact on all accounts that had cell numbers.
How can FNB save money you ask?

Simple, it stops / reduces fraud massively.

I had a case where someone skimmed and cloned my card, after the first R1,999 transaction,
I contacted FNB and they blacklisted the card.
So instead of losing R40,000 (card limit), they lost R1,999.
I guess R38,000 can send lots of SMS's at 19c each.

Not sure why ABSA charges 48c - they only cost 19c to send.

The fraud saving easily funds the cost for inContact.

Other banks don't understand the benefits of notifying customers of unauthorized activity on client accounts.

Way to go FNB.
ABSA you suck.

standard bank charges 65c per payment confirmation email

I pay 65c per payment confirmation email sent from my Standard Bank business account. Plus they made sure you can't print a proper proof of payment as you do the transaction to avoid the email.

Imagine I had to pay Google for each email I send or receive on my GMail account.

Stinks greed of the banks if you ask me.

The 48c per e-mail does not go down well with some ABSA clients, including well known Internet professional Matthew Buckland which said on Twitter “Am quite dumbstruck that ABSA charges 48c PER EMAIL on their "NotifyMe" service. SMS I understand, but e-mail? Great margins!”.

I am loving FNB even more. No charge there. :)

FNB For the Win!

FNB F**k The World!

FNB YOU ROCK!

I got a Life Start Student account and Silver Cheque Account, and the banking charges are always around R20 p/m. It only gets expensive when I draw from another banks ATM where the fee sky rockets to R20. I think they even charged me R50 once. I love the incontact service. It really makes you feel more in touch with your banking account, so that you're aware of every cent that gets paid in to and paid out of the account.
