Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback - 2

Wondering about something.

Why would something like this happen on the first hop of a traceroute?

I logged a fault with Telkom on 8 Dec which was claimed to be resolved on 27 Dec.
Logged again on 31 Dec, claimed to be resolved on 5 Jan
Logged again today.

Will keep on logging faults

Latencies jump up to over a second but after 5 Jan the first hop ALWAYS just says "Request timed out"?
I don't know what the hell they're doing but it doesn't look like it's making anything better

This is my average speed test result

:(

Telkom has made significant changes to their ADSL networking and the Exchange over the past few weeks, this is supposed to ensure more stable ADSL lines, but we have had significant users experiencing similar jumps in latencies from the second hop.

What sort of feedback have you been getting from Telkom?

Tried a port reset on Afrihost's site. It failed. Now I have no ADSL access at all. Won't authenticate at all.

How do you do this? Does Afrihost have to manage your line?

When we manage your line we give you access to the back end features of Telkom's portal. However, at the moment Telkom changed their systems and some features are not working consistently. Should be sorted soon when Telkom update us and restore full access. Then you'll be able to reset your DSL port and also set your line sync profile.

I report it, get and sms saying "Fault # has been created", get an sms saying "Telkom will attend to your faulty services shortly", couple of days later saying "your report reference # was restored. If the problem still exists please contact Telkom".

And then rinse and repeat...:cry:

Even during the daytime hours it's pretty crappy... From previous results you can see it gets much worse in the evening.

Going thru this myself at the moment .... Its fooking frustrating.

I remember that Eskom, the Post Office, SAPS and Telkom are all run by the same bunch of pirates ... and I start crying all over again.

I have a feeling that the latency is being introduced at the exchange here, not much we can do in terms getting this fixed up apart from waiting for the DSLAM scheduled upgrades to be pulled through :(

Possibility of posting line stats? You could hope that something is wrong with the line and telkom could come out to fix it, else you are *not in a good place*.

Is something wrong with Afrihost's DNS server? I had issues loading quite a few sites yesterday and changing to the Google DNS fixed that.

Pings to games are bloody brilliant tonight. ~17ms to local DoTA 2 servers and ~210ms to League of Legends. Hope it stays like this

Not that I know of, but there could be a gremlin somewhere in the cluster. Is everything normal if you change back now?

It is with sadness that I report AH are going through one of their communication droughts again.

I have now mailed support three times with no response, and mailed Afrigeinie, who responded needing more info, which I have sent, but then never got back to me.

If I have upset anyone - sorry.

If not, please explain, that its just good business and common courtesy to respond to messages.

Thanks

Not a pleasant experience with the guy, but it seems we are back online....

Line stats are looking much worse after 5 January when they "resolved" the issue.
SNR downstream is 5.4 :(
Upstream 12
Downstream used to be 11+
Funny thing is that it doesn't EVER disconnect.

Attenuation is 44.9

Port resets are not helping. I tried the stabilise line feature speed on the clientzone to lower the sync sleed and see if it brings up the SNR but it keeps syncing to 4mbps even though I choose a lower rate.

A telkom guy was here yesterday and blamed the problem with the SNR on a tree's branches touching the line. Cut the branches and no change whatsoever. LOL
Will report a fault again and hopefully the same guy comes out

EDIT:
I ran the test my line in the client zone and under ADSL router results the SNR there says 11.8 and attenuation 25.5

Under DSLAM results SNR is 9.5 and attenuation 44.5

My attenuation is 55db.
The trcert shows the hop from the router to exchange is variable - (or was) - anything from 23 to 400 ms.

The first Telkom guy said the line from the exchange was the problem - bear in mind that the last 2 months have been abso - frikken - loootely great, till first week January. He promised all sorts of things, and then vanished.

The second guy came with the whole - you have to sync at 3 megs and blah bulldust. I refused to accept this cr@p.

No - his buddy has found the problem, but I think Telscum dont want to do too much work on the lines, with the fibre being installed.

I also notice - these thieves enjoy getting OT on the weekends, customers be damned!!
