So where do we go from here? If Afrihost would sort out their latency in the South I would gladly stay, but its always the same story, "we are currently looking into it". How many more months are you going to be looking instead of doing something? it's always the same response, I remember when we were told the merger with MTN would have no effect on our customers experience.....lol, When I sined up I had sub 50ms ping, now its a consistent 200+ this on a 8Mbs Business Uncapped. Please tell me what I should do because this Advertisement on your site is no longer relevant, "Enjoy Unshaped, Unmetered and Prioritised DSL broadband all in one neat, but very explosive package! You can also enjoy the benefits of Static IPs exclusively on Business DSL."

I can't go into much detail now, but obviously we're going to do our utmost to make sure it's a smooth process, as the details are confirmed we'll communicate them though. At this stage, it's internal testing and an implementation of two POCs - so quite early still.

Ye, i think Afrihost is on a downward spiral.... Think it's time to say bye bye.

I joined afrihost cause mweb was intoducing those softcaps. But with Afrihost it's not softcapped but with the constant slow speeds i might aswell be "throttled".

Youtube and streaming services has really been a shlepp since i joined them 7-8months ago and makes the experience very frustrating. They say they fix it.. and then it lasts a week or two weeks and everything is slow again.

Sorry to hear that you're wanting to leave.
YouTube shouldn't have been a problem for this long though, my personal experience has been quite good (current Google issues barred though)

Just a suggestion of mine... I would suggest Afrihost go back to the drawing board and upgrade the capacity both south and north.

But upgrade it in such a manner that there is always 25-40% spare. To have plenty available if the poppo hits the fan

Running on barely enough or overselling data/capacity is not ideal. (and not having spare is not a good option)

Rather have it and not use it.. vs not having it <not being able to do anything about it>

I know it's easy to say, as everything costs money... and one needs to uphold profit margins etc.etc.
In Practice its not easy to actually apply.

Ideally...
If you can be one upgrade ahead (your actually saving yourself time , worry's and money)

Gian replied in his thread about upgrades and what not, that probably answers it better than what I can.

Hi aws

First off thanks for your business - I do appreciate it, and I promise that it will get better.

Second, sorry that you think that my post is hot air. I do understand why you'd say that - I probably would also doubt a CEO's word if I'd been receiving below par service.

All I can say is we are moving heaven and earth to deliver a legendary service again.

WRT to the 'new' network POC's: They are not related to the architecture of the current network. They are brand new and have been built for the sole reason of creating a long term solution to delivering the best possible Internet experience in the future.

As to the actual cause of our current network issues:

Over the weekend we had problems with Google caching on our network (Gmail, Google, YouTube etc) which would have exacerbated the general network problems. Last night we replaced hardware on our network and as far as I know this is now working better.

The general cause is related to our IPC and our traffic management system. For a variety of reasons we have not been able to upgrade our IPC to the the capacity we clearly need, and this together with not having the level of control over the traffic protocols that we'd like has led to congestion at peak times. This has then led to poor latencies and poor download speeds at times.

So what are we doing right now to fix the problem?

We are constantly working on improving and optimising the traffic on the network. And, as mentioned, we are working on getting the POC's up and running as soon as possible so that we can get as many clients as possible onto them, thus alleviating the pressure on the current IPC infrastructure.

Thanks again

makes sense.. but how quick is quick. Will these upgrades happen in a week. 2weeks?

or are we talking about months ?

It's not just google, Skype is !@#$.

Business video call, and Skype decides it can't handle the video so it freezes for a few minutes and drops the video.

Other services may be affected I'm afraid :(
I promise, we're working really hard on getting things sorted out.

Really?

Then why haven't I received anything except tax invoices from you? LIES, yet again.

We need to wait for things to settle first, what we've done in the past once issues have been resolved we give back where we can.

AfriPeople, what's the deal with being told it isn't IPC and then Gian posts that it is IPC?

Did they lie to you about it, or was it just something to keep under wraps?

There haven't been any conspiracy theories here, no one has been lied to :)
Demand has always been there and we've had to keep up with us - recently not as well as we'd have liked. Gian explains the rest in his post though.
