Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback - Part 3

looks like you are having dns problems as we could not work last night and our vpn did not work either so please stop telling us that you have no problems as soon as we switch over to another isp everything just works
and stop asking for tests just fix your network as that is what we are paying you for

You definitely don't need to test the network if you're not willing, but the reality is that at the scale we're talking about, the only way forward is to work together. Those that do work with us are going to have the benefit of knowing that their services have been incorporated into core testing and will work well when the network is fully deployed. I would highly recommend being part of the process.

I'm not sure that we're having DNS problems, I definitely did not pick up on this, but I am seeing people using different DNS providers see some issues, we're still testing to replicate this.

See, this worries me. It's a POC and people are giving feedback and they are getting the same canned response already that there is no issue.

It just sounds to familiar.

I can see how someone making the same comment continuously could be really annoying :(

Not sure what assistance I can offer here. We've discussed these issues extensively over PM (with myself and other reps) and I think we've let you know that we're working on the issues reported and this is also factored into the AfriGreen network. If you're already on the AfriGreen network, I would definitely suggest reporting this to the team so that they can address this :(

All I want is the service I had when I joined Afrihost, the days where I could download, and watch videos and not have to wait for pages to load, even trying to get on to these forums is a mission these days, the site does not always load.

Is that too much to ask, being told you have done everything you can on my account, is just not acceptable, if simple things like videos on Youtube do not work. I am not the only one with these problems, as this forum is full of clients reporting the same things over and over. I get given a credit for one month, and now I get told, that's it?

We've already said that our senior management will look at ways of rewarding clients en masse when we have resolved our network issues. This will be once we've factored in the cost of the POC network deployments and work out exactly how much we can give back. If you have already received credit, then I reckon that's fair for now, and we'll revisit that when things are sorted out.

Friday last week, it was stated the Afrihost DNS was having issues with Google Services.

Doubt it, still cannot watch youtube, change back to opendns, and its better, but still not ideal. The fact that you think things are fixed and are not is worrying.

We'll have to gather feedback on this. Our tests definitely show that the issue is not coming up for us. Will ask the team to test further.

UPDATE: Just ran some tests on YouTube and Gmail from a standard ADSL line - all looking pretty good on this end :)

I've just run some tests on Google services and it's running perfectly.
My test conditions as follows:

10Mbps Business account
@afrihost.co.za
Google DNS and Afrihost DNS yielding the same results

Results:
Gmail opens quickly, attachments are uploaded as quickly as my line can handle
No lag in the interface, no reconnections
Google talk does not see any "reconnecting" messages

Google Docs is also responsive, no issues

Testing YouTube I'm able to stream 1080p content with no buffering, with content coming down at 7400Kbps on average

Throughout testing, content was being pulled from local Google caches

Please run similar tests and report back.

I posted the tests I ran on Friday, and you mentioned it looked like I was being routed internationally. Today I have to try various times just to open the youtube web page. Since Friday I have set my router back to the settings I was always using ie the OpenDNS settings, and it seems better, but still not 100%.

You still sent me a youtube link to open on Friday, and I mentioned the site wouldn't even open,

afrihost test.png

Then the test seems to stop, nothing happens further. This test was done a few mins ago.

I'd like to look at some fresh results for the week, as I believe any issues from last week have been resolved over the weekend, specifically around YouTube issues.

I'm really not sure why you aren't even able to access the page, I think something else is going wrong here.

Here's a summary of my tests, can you post yours please?
Please complete the tests either using dynamically assigned or Google's DNS servers.

Code:
--- youtube.com ping statistics ---
13 packets transmitted, 13 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 44.434/57.382/88.130/13.528 ms

Code:
traceroute to youtube.com (66.8.14.35), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
 1 router.asus.com (192.168.1.1) 1.648 ms 5.327 ms 1.926 ms
 2 * * *
 3 41.181.222.101 (41.181.222.101) 30.000 ms 22.873 ms 22.217 ms
 4 41.181.222.102 (41.181.222.102) 22.335 ms 52.050 ms 45.153 ms
 5 tb-dca-2.za--qux-c.za.mtnbusiness.net (41.181.198.188) 63.481 ms 42.263 ms 113.970 ms
 6 unc-cpt-1.mtnns.net (196.44.18.8) 62.609 ms 22.986 ms 29.115 ms
 7 pe-cr-2.za--el-mse-1.za.mtnns.net (196.44.31.66) 107.317 ms 62.801 ms 44.883 ms
 8 jh-dca-2.za--jh-cr-1.za-a.mtnns.net (41.181.180.11) 45.622 ms 44.903 ms 44.339 ms

Stats for nerds reflect 7400Kbps while streaming 1080p content.
I also see you have access to Afrigreen but haven't run any tests yet?

I also see you have access to Afrigreen but haven't run any tests yet?

I posted a screenshot of a test that was just run. After hop 7, things seem to get slow, and then oddly the test seems to hang at hop 17, and never gets further.

I very seldom go to the clientzone, I only saw on Saturday that I was giving access to the test network, but due to other commitments I have not had time to switch over and do tests. I might have time later this week.

I'm really not sure why you're seeing such high latency.
Have you made any adjustments to your host file?

Still seeing slow throughput over openVPN ( Afrigreen and old style ) - Old style seems a tad faster, but not really worth mentioning.

Nope, and this is the same on a new pc, with just Windows 7 installed, no files modified, all default.

I just want to confirm, is YouTube the only site that's an issue or are Google services affected across the board?

google services and dns is in the crapper again as from 30min ago everything is jercy and not loading properly
