Afrihost Fibre Feedback

Morning Afripeeps

Having the same issue where a line and package upgrade is not going through. Requested it last week and can see it says pending package change with no upgrade happening.

I can check on this for you, can you please PM me your details!

That's something we won't be able to guarantee... :( I would suggest that you go with as high a profile as you are comfortable paying for. :)

So, I tried upgrading to 20mbps. Your site said the change would happen at midnight. Two midnights later, and no change yet. If I try to change it again, it says that there is already an upgrade pending. I see other people here complaining about the same thing.

Hi AfriGenie,

What does the fibre connection entail? How is the fibre connection made to the router? I have Openserve

The upgrade can take a few days to complete. I think the message states that your upgrade will initiate from midnight, but I'll ask our Team to take a look at the wording in ClientZone.

Heya Quixotic. :) Openserve uses PPPoE connection protocols. In other words, the authentication happens on your router and not on the ONT device.

Thanks. Does this mean the existing cabling to/in the house to the router is used? When does it start to be come a fibre connection? This is from the Telkom's website. Is the ONT then installed in the house?

Stage 1 – External Work: Bringing the fibre cable to your property

In the first phase Telkom lays Optical cables in the Main Services sleeves to manholes on one side of the pavement (could be under/upper ground as each suburb is different).

Telkom will then connect the Fibre to a small box (ONT) which needs to be fixed to a wall inside your property, as per requirement from customer. It could be your internal server room, study, entertainment room as each home is different.

Stage 2 – Internal Work: Your engineering appointment to complete the fibre installation inside your home

The technician will bring the Fibre into your home and fit your Fibre Modem in a location agreed with you .

No, there is no copper used at any point. Openserve will schedule a date and install the fibre line along with the ONT device. :)

Hi again. It has been a few days. Could you please be more specific: what is the maximum number of days that should be considered normal?

My original support ticket on international slowness, for which I received an email response, doesn’t even show up in the Clientzone Support interface, 8 days later. I reckon you guys are drowning at some level. I don’t want my line upgrade to be stuck in some broken queue, indefinitely, hoping for something to change in a “few days” time...

Most packages changes are handled automatically by our system. :) As AfriFella said, drop us a PM with your details and I'll check what's going on.

Ok, I'll PM you, but for the record, I don't see why Afrihost can't commit to a maximum number of days for an upgrade. It really sucks that you don't want to take more money from me, but what sucks even more is this uncertainty that seems to have become the new normal for you.

Something really wrong past 2 days on Fibre. This is from PTA East:

Sorry I have to put it up here since your support just does not work lately.

So, same **** different day. Can someone please, please explain to me why this is happening on afrihost?

It's very difficult for us to make those kind of commitments when the process is outside of our control. We rely on the providers and each has their own process. We are trying to standardise the process, but that involves a lot of negotiation with many different players :(

Which provider are you connecting with? If you can PM me more detail we can try to get to the bottom of this for you :(

So it’s Octotel’s fault? Ok, then, let’s see if we can establish anything useful out of this: what is the AVERAGE time it takes you to upgrade an Octotel line from 10/10 to 20/5?

Thanks a lot to your friend AfriGenie for not getting back to me either since last week’s PM.

Sadly, tomorrow is the renewal of your billing cycle, and I’m then committed to another month of this crappy bandwidth

Looks like I’m already in for another month of being billed. Well, screw it. It will be cheaper to leave you than to waste more evenings typing away here. Let’s see if I can get someone else to give me a faster line on Octotel, quicker than the ten days it’s taken you guys to do nothing. Losing 700 bucks is worth the aggravation I’ll save. Contract cancelled. Goodbye.

I'm sorry to hear you're considering taking that route. :( It certainly looks like we've been trying to help you here, paoloc. :( If there is anything I can chase up for you personally, feel free to drop me a PM.

So just switched over to Afrihost with Openserve fibre, coming from Telkom LTE. Main rationale for the switch was consistent speeds because LTE would go from good to horrendous in a matter of seconds.

I'm not a techie so just using basic speed tests to track performance (installed 2 weeks ago), at first it was great but I have seen a gradual degredation of speeds to the point that online gaming is worse than when I was on LTE.

On a capped 200GB 40mbps package, using my broadband tests I go from 4ms ping to 28ms ping and my speed seems to be around the 25mbps mark. For the first week I consistently got around 38mbps and low pings and just not sure if this is a once off problem or part of a larger issue.

Seems to have started this weekend but how does one address an issue like this?

We'll need to do some tests from our side. Are you gaming over WiFi or a network cable?

Going to switch off the fibre box & router tonight + use a cable to see if there is a difference.

Speed tests were also done on wifi
