Afrihost is upgrading its ADSL network

So this upgrade will "solve" the problem for a couple of months, then they will realise too late that they need more capacity and won't have it available before the network degrades into 10KB/s on thier 10Mbps accounts again.

Rinse.

Repeat.

MTN has no clue what they are doing and has proved this multiple times since Afrihost/Axxess moved to their ADSL network.

You forgot the months of denial and "optimisation" while "tweaking" shaping profiles in between ping-pong volleys of reps vs AH support feedback followed by the operating-system-updates-blame-game and finally the contended performance of anything other than browsing and email just before the mybroadband big article reveal that the Afrihost upgrades are to be started immanently soon... accompanied by the over use of emoticons and tracert diagnostic between chanting mantras and self-motivating PR spin.

Lots of armchair experts here who are convinced they know how to run one of the biggest ISPs in the country and are sure they could be doing a much better job of it! ;)

Wait till you hit their "thresholds" ;) or get deemed an abusive user

Been on WA now for close on a year, I've seen shaping but nothing like the shaping AfriHost/Axxess applies on their network. Think the worst I saw was probably around 150KB/s during the day when I was still on 10Mbps and had a 1 star rating, think I used close to 600GB that month. My general usage sits around the 200-300GB mark and I never drop below 3 stars, generally on 4

AH just throttled their 10Mbps users to 10KB/s regardless of how much you actually used yourself.

Wait, I'm on about mweb! Web Africa are pretty good in my books, if I were to dump Afrihost I'd go over to them

It's not the running of the network that's the issue, it's the PR spin.

Most people will accept a glitch here and there for a while, as long as they're not fed a load of spin.

Their big faux pas, the one that broke their formerly loyal users trust (permanently), was to promote accounts advertised
as "Guaranteed Unshaped", and then when they were forced to shape to keep the network stable, flatly deny it and spin it as "some services being (selectively) degraded due to contention".

Hi Guys

I see a lot of overflow from some of our threads with comments about shaping Business and Capped accounts. This has obviously been an ongoing issue, and we are definitely not shaping any of our bandwidth for Capped and Business accounts, exactly as per the advertisement. To say that we selectively degrade certain services gives the impression that we are shaping and that is not the case. The reality is that demand and contention to this degree has unpredictable results, and that's what we're seeing across the forums, social media and our support channels.

I think many people are thinking of this from an individual perspective or some QoS systems they've setup locally or on small networks. From an ISP perspective, this goes into layers and layers of complexity that I can't profess to fully comprehend. Suffice to say that when our technical tell me that we're not shaping, I do believe that this is the case.

Again, I don't want to get into the same debate that has been going on in other threads, but I think it's important that anyone reading this thread see all sides and then make up their own mind :)

Defs a capacity issue, as all my downloads have been running at the same pace, as I'd think later in the evenings the speed tests improve and downloads speed up

And since the day before yesterday my Afrihost account is now also acting up. ~10% packet loss.

Switch to a Telkom account, and everything works fine. And that says a LOT.

Was going to jump ship from Telkom to Afrihost, now I'm not so sure...

Did the Upgrades in Cape Town work?

It has been more than a week since this thread started and 2 weeks since the Help Desk informed me of the pending upgrade, but if anything my connection is now worse.

What is happening?

Can we at least have a status update?

My line has been down since last week Thursday(23 Oct 2014), worked that morning then suddenly...down. I was told i will get regular updates but still don't know what the heck is happening.
All i want to know where and what the problem is...was going so well.

Guess i have to start shopping around again :(
