Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that your router model is the 65d and not the 22d. The 65d is best for Telkom bands. The 22d is best for MTN and Vodacom.

That’s a valid point.
The 65d supports MTN’s main LTE bands (B1, B3) just fine.
The 22d only adds extra TDD bands (like B40), which MTN doesn’t use.

Since my issue is with Band 3 handoffs (PCI 267), both the 65d and 22d would behave the same way.
I feel like it’s a tower/config problem, not the router.

It been working fine for about 5 years now.
I recently noticed an issue, and after a lot of research was able to figure out it seemed to be related to a certain tower.

I had this problem with a friends ZTE router in other city. Keeps jumping to a tower that has 108db sigal out of the blue.

The zte has no band lock so had to the 3only and 4gonly trick to get it back to the good tower each bloody day for like a month. Then it stopped doing it out of the blue.

So it might be mtn issue more then the router itself

You read about the leaked info about MTN new AI algorithm that starts throttling people.....and Afrigirl admitted on mybb that it over rides their own FUP policies? Not sure if related...but it seems very underhanded to me.

You might be throttled but that upload shows you definitely have some other issues.

I've been throttled to 30mbit since the 11th of August despite paying for 100mbit. Think everyone that doesn't just use their internet for checking their emails should switch to either a capped account or better (move to Telkom or Vodacom). This isn't going to improve.

might be mtn issue

Yeah. I identified the issue's on the cell tower and provided info re. this.

Can someone on here from Afrihost or MTN assist me to log a fault so an RF tech can check out what's up with PCI 267?

The issue doesn't seem to be on my side.

So past couple of days it has been a joy to use.
And as you all know, when it slows to super high latency, and miserable throughput, it is a massive pain and frustration to use.

Today MTN (not Afrihost) is throttling me to ~10mbit.

This has been my daily usage so far this month on a 500GB FUP account.

Clearly a data hoarder running an -arr stack.

EDIT: After the past 4 days I've also noticed crazy unstable pings in the late afternoon and in the evenings since they started throttling me to 10mbit. Spikes of 300-2000ms which makes online gaming impossible, even when there is nothing else using the bandwidth. I'm exactly where I was with Rain 5G a year ago, but now it's MTN.

I got MTN 5G and Vodacom 5G from AXXESS and initially both were throttled to 60Mbps in August. Logged a support ticket and they told me MTN did it but they reset my package and then it's back to more than 300Mbps for a few days and then throttled again. Vodacom is so bad most of the time it does not even get to 40Mbps but I only use it as a backup working from home.
So now it's basically a weekly thing where I send AXXESS a ticket to fix the throttling issue on my MTN package. Maybe it's time to log a complaint with https://www.cgso.org.za/cgso/ and also ICASA. Not that I expect too much too happen but it's worth a try.

The extreme throttling seems to kick in around 14:00 (~8-10mbit) and the less extreme throttle kicks in around 23:00 (30mbit). This is on a 100mbit account with a 500GB FUP. It does not matter if it's the 1st of the month. It does not matter if you used less than half your FUP by the 15th. These limits stay.

There seems to be no incentive to use your data sparingly now. So little can be done during the day when sharing 10mbit between several people. In fact you should just download freely and hit the 500GB FUP because it does not matter, you will still have the same shitty speed during the most important time of the day.

Anyone else have huge discrepancies between the amount of data used reported by the router and that reported by Afrihost? Today on the 3rd of October, my TP-Link Archer MR600 (supplied by Afrihost) Reports usage so far for the month is 35.18GB whereas Afrihost's Clientzone Dashboard reporst 46.94 GB used. I know the Router's report is maybe not that accurate, but this is a huge margin of error...

Hi.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused during this period. How is the connection now?

Hi.

Please drop me a direct message with account details so I can check.

Again Network terrible ..

Full Signal, external antenna. Does not matter if reboot or switch Bands..

Does your router still aggregate? My MR600v5 stopped aggregating and always stuck on a single band no matter what I do for the last 5 days or so. Latency spikes of 2000ms+ and timeouts throughout most of the day as well.

Besides that, download speeds seems normal, unless of course, when the connection times out.

When I had Supersonic my connection would randomly just drop to be the worst of the worst, moved to Afrihost on the same tower with an Archer MR600, it was better, but still had latency spikes, jumping to random cellid's on the same tower, download/upload very poor.

I then reused the ZTE MC801A I got from Supersonic, locked the PCI/EARFCN (with a special script) to the best one there was, and like magic most of the issues vanished, I still get latency spikes during peak times, but any time that is not 19:00 - 22:00 it works perfect, I also don't get throttled by MTN itself, this might be area specific. I'm on the 100mbps uncapped with Afrihost and I can reach about 60mbps max, surprisingly enough, the download I get is always close to the speed I'm supposed to get, all this because I locked the PCI/EARFCN. Sad that the MR600 doesn't support that.

This beats what I had with Cell C and Rain put together. Pretty much every night for the last 2 weeks.

This is at 20:30 from a connection that sits idle.

Don't get Fixed MTN if you only have a 4G router. Just don't.

What are the signal stats on your router?
