Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 3

Its not just twitch its all streaming. Even my steam downloads are being shaped. This network went to S#@t as soon as the moblile packages started

Not sure what the relationship between Mobile and DSL would be, while we use the same kit to ensure that we route and manage traffic correctly, mobile traffic does not go via our IPC so it should have no effect whatsoever on DSL speeds. This has been in place since last year already.

Which product are you connecting with? ON a shaped product, Steam downloads would be considered a non-realtime service.

LOL!

So if your IPC isn't congested, your DSL network is fine? :D ROTFLMAO No wonder you claim there's 'no problem' for MONTHS now whilst your users suffer.

Yes, also looks like unshaped capped accounts are still partly shaped on torrents.

That definitely should not be the case. There are no shaping policies in place, so every protocol is given priority on the network. The only cause would be very high demand on the network overall, so even when shaped products are shaped to the max, the network is still under strain.

To get 12am-6pm free time, which SHAPED capped account do you need to be on?

It doesn't matter whether the product is shaped or unshaped, the R299 data product limit determines whether you get Free-time or After Hours data. So as long as your product costs R299 or more (data product, not inclusive bundle), you will get Free-Time :)

Can you investigate issues then with gaming? This should not be shaped unless the network is under severe strain and everyone is saying, network is fine.

Haha! I feel so sorry for webafrica. A ton of people signed up their trial accounts because afrihost cant get their stuff together.

Also feel sorry for the afrihost team on my broadband.
They have to deal with all our shouting and I suspect they know the truth something isn't right but they're not allowed to say.
Facebook team is lucky, they just block you. Ask me how I know. Haha!

If we block you on Facebook, it's because you've conducted yourself in a manner contrary to the social media guidelines, which are publicly available. Similar to MyBB's forum rules.

We definitely take note of complaints, but our network team has a dedicated NOC group who monitor the network in all regions and would definitely alert us of any network wide issues, so that we can report them here. We also feed information into them for testing and replication to determine if any isolated reports could have a larger impact or be a widespread client experience. At this point, we have not identified a network wide issue.

If you can give me the specific game, the username you're connecting with, the DNS settings you use and the time you are playing - we can definitely check what's happening with your connection specifically. Just drop in PM and I'll check for you :)

Doesn't look to good, but what is running in the background. Very worrying to see latency to your router as high as 8ms :(

AH, when you sent a mail out to capped clients that they would only be shaped as a last resort i didn't realize that meant every night between 6pm - 10pm.

Like clockwork at 6 my line drops from 15-16Mbps to between 5-8Mbps.

If you over sold your capacity please advertise these capped accounts as shaped between those hours rather than trying to pull the wool over people's eyes.

We have definitely not oversold, in fact I believe we've been carrying additional capacity (at a massive cost to company) to ensure a good experience.

I'm not sure how often shaping on Shaped Capped has been employed, we certainly didn't see much shaping of any sort over December and early Jan. I am pretty sure that our intention is not to have a regularly shaped product. And as I've mentioned before, the way our shaping works is that realtime speeds are untouched, so your speedtests should show full speed at all times regardless.

We should really do more troubleshooting on this before we make the leap to shaping :(

PM sent.

Actually, I remember having this issue last year. Turns out it was a faulty port/card in the exchange, will you guys be able to tell Telkom to do this or will I have to ask Telkomza like last time?

Port card faults are pretty rare, it's unlikely to have occurred twice on the same line, but I guess it is possible. We will have to convince Telkom that this could be the issue, so TelkomZa may be able to help to get someone to investigate a little quicker. Either way we should be able to get an answer :)

Telkom came to my house today. I explained the issue to them and they said oky, they are going to go and replace something at the exchange (think she said MSAN?). It hasn't changed a damn thing though.

I'm still sitting with over 2000 ms latency at this moment. Fantastic.

Any idea what they were replacing? Can you drop me a PM so I can log an escalation on this for you?

Unshapped capped account. At around 21:00 it went up dramatically and the download finished pretty quickly. Was running at 0.23 and then shot up to 500

That is very odd. Maybe we need to check that your shaping policy has been changed as it should have. Just drop me a PM so I can check for you :)

You should communicate this with the call centre sales team. Call centre agent advised me that it has to be a 300gb account regardless of whether it's shaped or not. I knew that was wrong, so I kept asking questions, and he then proceeded to try to talk over me a few times, assuming I was clueless. This is basic product knowledge, your SALES team should really be familiar with this.

I totally understand, and I do apologise. If I could ask a small favour - I know our guy made a mistake, could you please remove his name though? We're all human, and we'll definitely look into helping him improve, but I would appreciate if we can keep names out of public messages for privacy and dignity.

I'll check with our team as well if there is any general misconception around this, but the policy is very clear in terms of working on the rand value (R299pm) and not on the amount of data included.

Sure, removed it.
