Afrihost - Pure Fibre Feedback Thread

Also Walmer but seems to be more widespread. Eastern Cape as far as I can tell.

Thanks. Do you also know how long they usually take to edit the website to at least acknowledge connectivity issues in the region? I always just assumed it was automated like general problem in connectivity was detected in an area and the website would update itself ...

Some sort of transmission failure. No official notice yet. Openserve fibre, adsl and Telkom Mobile are affected in that region.
Thanks

I'm currently still talking to the afrihost team through the ticket system.
So far they have responded with the generic we are doing a session audit. Turn your modem off for 10 mins and run "traceroute to example.com"

Usually takes some time. As far as I know they have to wait for Openserve to send them the details before they post anything.

Kinda stupid that they want you to ping to servers for test when the whole eastern cape is down. Any update?

Fair enough. But its something they can say that they are aware of a situation and are awaiting feedback :)

No I havent received anything yet. Last message I received was at 20h00 :/
It was the same thing I actually complained about on here the last time this sort of thing happened in December. Its really retarded that I get asked to do such things and send screenshots of the results when the problem is connectivity. You basically get circle jerked with responses like that and eventually get told to completely hard reset your router and nothing still works. And somehow in the mid morning everything starts working again (assuming once the fault has been found and fixed).

Can't make full sense of this on my phone... can you explain?

I'm not getting the packet loss you guys are seeing (in PE) but still being routed via JHB at much higher latency.

You're not being routed over the hop that's giving problems. Compare the IP addresses.

Thanks, I get that.

I was trying to show that I'm also in PE and getting routed via JHB (for kak latency) while the other guys in PE are at normal 12ms latency (via CPT) but with packet loss.

I assume this is due to the PE -> CPT capacity issues that some suburbs in PE are going via JHB.

@russellO I actually reached out to Afrihost about this a few months ago, to no avail. I'm in George & my route goes George -> PE -> JHB -> CPT... So it's not related to the Capacity issue. But definitely frustrating when I see other guys I know from around here with noticeably less latency.

@AfriGuy Why still? (Supposed to be 100mb line...)

So tried again to set up a Cybersmart email address. Same fcking results... see below (just one of many combinations tried)... any suggestions?

Just check your port. This is what I have. Sending from an Afrihost connection no authentication required. If you send from another connection then get the authentication details in clientzone > fibre service > Manage Email > All the details will be displayed there.

Ah I see, that is pretty crappy.

Same result... meh.... maybe @AfriGuy can chime in with some feedback.

To get my external mail working on Afrihost I had to configure my pop3 and smtp according to the mail provider and enable "Requires logon" for both incoming and outgoing.

Perhaps try smtp.cybersmart.co.za as your smtp and configure your username/password for your mail account?

Tried but failed... I give up hey...

Can someone please provide some guidance as to Afrihost's policy on this:

If I cancel my 200Mbps Openserve fibre today for effect end of May 2020, and want to sign up again sometime in November, am I expected to pay anything above the monthly cost of the service since the physical line is installed already and it should just be a port activation on Openserve's side?

@AfriGuy @AfriFella

EDIT: I did contact Afrihost about this but the reply I got was:

Which is of no help at all :(

AFAIK, the only cost associated with migrating away is if you're still in the 6 month period after sign up, in which case there's a R999 cancellation fee. If it's outside of that period, you cancel, they release your line next month and that's the end of your relationship with AH.

Just double check the cancellation dates because while the client zone says you need to cancel before the 22nd of each month, some AH reps here have said the 15th before, so I'm not sure which is correct anymore, and if you cancel after that you'll still be billed for the following month.

Well if you can cancel this month did you have the service for at least 6 months? If yes then there will be no cancellation fee. Once cancelled the line will be pushed back to the holding pool. I'm not too sure how long Openserve will keep the line in suspended state in the pool for before completely cancelling the B number. If it does not get cancelled and you do signup later this year again and the migration from the pool to Afrihost happens successfully the the R570 activation fee is the only fee and if Afrihost is still running the promotion of free installation this will be covered by that promotion.

If Openserve cancels the B number completely by the time you want to signup again it would count as a new installation which carriers the R2800 install fee + R570 activation fee and once again if Afrihost is still offering free installation that will be covered. In this case Openserve will swap the ONT and allocate a new B number unfortunately.

Both cases will also carry a new 6 month R999 cancellation policy from Afrihost when you join again.
